Completed - Warm air into the rear Dog create

Updated: quick and simple fix added on page 2 of post......

___________________________________

After a very wet and cold (but very enjoyable) 5hr Brecon Beacons walk yesterday, followed by a drive to Swansea, borh dogs were freezing and still very damp by the time we arrived at my mothers.

So i began to wonder if i could divert one of the rear air vents, back into the dog crate. It seems fairly straight forward, was thinking i could use pond or ventilation tubing and running it back into a vent hole cut into the bottom of the K9 dog crate.

Before i start, just wandering if anybody has dome something similar?

I like the idea of ventilation to the rear for the dog boxes and would be interested to see what and how you do it. I've always found keeping them cool the harder thing to do which your idea would help with by piping the cold air back there too.

As for keeping them warm and drying them off, I use Hotterdog/Equafleece jumpers after toweling them off with an Easidri towel.

The jumpers get them toastie warm and dry fairly quickly. The towel comes in a tube for easy storage.

Might be something for you whilst working out your plans. Thumbs Up

No...but

I have a towelling "dog bag" in which the dog dries off & stays warm. It's made from heavy duty towelling & has a heavy duty zip up the spine & carrying handles.

I have had mine for many years; made by a friend cribbing something available on the market, but better quality materials. It really works and collects all the dirt, so by the time you get home you have a clean, dry, warm dog.

Something like this:-

I’d agree with Jamez use an Equifleece as it will wick the moisture away, unless you have a hairdryer in the back you’ll never get the dog dry without overheating it. In my 06 D3 I had rear aircon which worked well for keeping the dogs cool.

Now the washing off bit would be good! Always feel sorry for them having been out and getting wet and muddy, to dry off in the back of the motor on the way home, to then be washed at home only to be dried again.

My older dog, knows whats coming and is reluctant to get out of the dog crate when I pull onto the drive. Laughing

The only thing I've seen to wash them on the go is:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mud-Daddy-99000DS...amp;sr=8-5

You either need to take the water with you, which will be cold by the time you come to wash them which is not ideal in autumn/winter, or have access to water where ever you are. I'm not sure how many washes you'd get either. I've got 4 mutts so I reckon I might run out. Still, not a bad idea and I don't see anything else about as an alternative.

A friend has a portable warm water shower system for horses, although I’ve not seen it.

I do know a couple of gun dog handlers who first dry their dogs off with large microfibre towels. Then they lie in crates that have 12v heat pads underneath “noodle” microfibre mats.

I have a couple of the “noodle” mats and they do work really well.

ETA: I have the Scruffs Noodle Dry Mats. Prices vary a fair bit for them, so search around. 👍

Something like this looks good. You’d need to fill it up with hot water before you left home though, so it could be cold by the time it was needed.

I like how the storage for the hose. Very neat.

Does your whippet get that wet then Tom? Ours have coats on so don’t get wet, we clean feet off with a towel and then they sit on vetbed in the cage. If we were having a long journey home we change coats.

Not really Paul, but he hates wearing a coat, when he’s out. If he’s on the lead and it’s really cold or pouring down, I’ll put on one of the several equifleece coats I’ve got. He never wears a coat off the lead though.

I use a microfibre towel and with such a short coat that works very quickly. Then the noodle mat does a good job of absorbing any remaining moisture. He’ll wear a coat in his car crate happily enough and I’ll also put a fleece blanket over him.

He’s ten and a half now though and his coursing/working days are over. He’ll still pick up the odd rabbit and squirrel when we’re out though.

Tom - I really like the look of the Muddi 15 washer.

Maybe we should try to sort out a group buy !

Shocked I’d never take a dog out in the winter without a coat, when we could course under rules they’d have 2 on on colder days or driven meets, rub down with lineament at the start of the day to warm muscles and coats to keep the muscles warm.
