The goverment are making us pay a higher rate road tax for our Disco3, because they state we pollute more & therefore have to pay more, so how come that vehicles registered before 1/1/73, with absolutely no anti pollution devices fitted at all, and pushing out far more harmful gases than us don't have to pay for a road tax. Doesn't this contradict the goverment's arguement? Surely if the goverments policies are to be believed, these class of vehicles should be paying more in duty than us, instead of no tax. I don't accept the arguement that they probably do less miles than us, as there is no such proof. never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly

Not enough pre "73 cars on the road to worry about & the ones that are on the road are often used very rarely.
No tax for my 6.3 V8 Jensen CV-8
But as I can't remember when I last drove it, that's fair enough.

There were just under 2 million exempt vehicles registered in 2005. This represents just under 7% of all vehicles in th UK.
I have to be honest...it's not often I see a 33+ year old motor on the road at rush hour  21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I've got 2 historic class vehicles, so I am all in favour. My 1970 MGB has done 0 miles in the past 12 months, and is actually SORN.
My 1966 109 series 2a does 15 mpg. It stinks like an oil fire, creates a local global warming hotspot in Bramhall whenever I start her up, upsets ramblers, annoys the neighbours and vegetation wilts in its wake, but It has only done 2000 miles in the past year.
It is very satisfying to get something for nothing from the government. Long may it last.

CO2 is directly proportional to fuel consumption and the amount of tax per litre of fuel is fixed.
Thus all vehicle owners are already paying tax which is directly proportional to the CO2 they generate.
This is just another excuse for an additional tax.
We are currently paying a duty of 47.1 pence per litre plus VAT at 17.5% on top of the total cost of the fuel.

Bureaucratic layers for tax gathering, he who pollutes least pays more, Dodgers getting past the law..... It's ALL garbage and it makes my blood boil 
Put ALL the green taxes on fuel and end this nonsense......
If you pollute, you pay - end of story.
If your car does less MPG than the next one, you pay more.
If you do more miles per year than the next guy, you pay more.
WHY do it differently 
Oh, while you are at it, end the free road tax nonsense at the same time. If you don't use your classic, or you rarely use it, then you aint going to bother.

BTW. With 7 vehicles to play with (one which gets <10mpg), you can't call me a hypocrite (Can you?)

My 36 year old ford escort is used as a second car through neccessity not choice, I am always chuffed when I buy one tax disc and get another free. If my second car happened to be an old saxo or an old skoda which i had to bin every three years the impact on the environment would be a lot higher than my 3000mile a year 1.3. Even if skodas and saxos lasted ten years - then my escort has stopped the production of three and a half other cars for me and others like me to have to bin (through falling to bits) and its got years left in it yet. 8) Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
