clutch problem apparently
Got a problem, i was reversing a trailer not heavy up a slight hill, was struggling, smoke coming from the bonet, and wheels . Managed to reverse after 10 min, but hell of a smell, as if brakes had been binding. managed to travel 20 miles, discs were red hot, and the park light came on, stopped and called for help as advised in handbook. It is now in with the local land rover dealer, and he has said that the clutch has gone, i said that the brakes were binding, they said there was no drive and it was the clutch, but we had drive and going into gear was not a problem as we loaded and unloaded it twice on to a car transporter. They say it is the clutch and it is due to wear and tear. I do not understand this as it is my third discovery and a clutch has never gone with me before. and they said reguarding my park brake that it was to do with the suspension and a faulty switch. I would like some advice please as they are telling me the clutch it is not covered under warranty as it is wear and tear on an 18 month old machine and it will cost £800.00 plus to repair. Help and advice if possible please.

what is the mileage of the D3, apparently the disco 3's clutch is a known weak point and with a bit of persuasion the dealer should sort this free of charge.
If they are not prepared to sort it I would try a different dealer, I think wiggs has just negotiated a new clutch from his dealer even though it hasn't failed as such, but it is showing signs of a problem.

I think it is 10,000 miles on clock i think. and really it has never done that much towing, and I dont think I ever ride the clutch. Bit of a pain spending x amount of pounds on a car, and then after 18 months needing to fork out £800.00 on a part that you think would last longer than 18 months.

Yes it was a braked trailer, my father said this comment today, saying most probably the brakes of the trailer knocked in also.

I made this mistake about four years ago with my D2...Not having towed a braked trailer before ..I took my niece to buy a horse just south of Edinburgh. The road outside the field access point was reasonably steep and I couldn't understand why the Horsebox wouldn't reverse easily. I managed to get it in position but not before I could smell a strong stench of clutch. Afterwards she said "oh you need to put this rod here to stop the brakes coming on if your trying to reverse uphill"
A lesson learnt 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
