Clutch Judder/stalling when braking

Does this ring a bell with anybody...

Slowing down for a junction, dip the clutch to change to lower gear and as I apply brakes I get a clutch judder and sometimes the engine stalls. It feels like the clutch is not completely disengaged but my foot is to the floor.

Gear changes work fine and the clutch pedal comes up about an inch before I feel the drive engaging when taking off so clutch action seems normal. It feels to me that when I apply brakes as I change down this somehow releases some of the clutch hydraulic pressure causing the slave cylinder to release slightly as I know clutch and brake master cylinders share a common reservoir.
