So I got the car up and checked everything for play, all bearing, all driveshafts and front prop. All calipers right, wheel nuts tight, everything as it should be.
No idea!!
It only seems to do this knocking when hot, I’ve not noticed it for a while when it’s cold ... could it be diff related? It also only does it if I’ve come to a complete stop, then pull away again.

I have the same problem. I have also replaced the rear prop and its still there. Did you resolve it ?

+1 rear/ front drive shafts
Are you getting any noise, when placing vehicle into gear ? Before car has moved?

No putting it into gear is ok (its a manual). At slow speeds its clunking. I will have a look at the front drive shaft and jack up each wheel and check for movement.....then report back

So jacked car up and all rotation or lack of is as normal. It chunks when pulling away and you can feel it through the gearstick

Jacked the car up and checked the play around the wheels and the front diff and all looked ok. Still no idea where the clonking is coming from

Well replaced both props and rear brake shoes, pads a d discs. My clunking is still there! I have been under the car and nothing is loose. Anyone got any ideas ?

Try the following:
Turn engine on, place park brake on, place one foot hard on brake pedal and use other foot to press down on clutch pedal, gently release clutch while being in 1st gear, to place some load on drivetrain and then place in reverse and repeat, ( this is the dangerous bit) while having someone under car, observing prop movement and driveshaft movement as load is placed on the CVs, prop and drive shafts
I did this (it’s easy in an automatic) and it showed the rear RHS driveshaft clunking as it rotated about 1/8 of a turn in the CV joint near diff, the CV was knackered.
Ordered and fitted new driveshaft and the clunk disappeared!!!!

Fixed What Sounds Like This Issue |

I know this is an old thread, but I had what sounds like this issue. It turned out to be a slow puncture on the passenger side front wheel bringing in the Dynamic Stability Control System or Traction Control (unsure which):
DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) optimises
vehicle stability, even in critical driving
situations. The system controls dynamic
stability when accelerating and when starting
from a standstill. Additionally, it identifies
unstable driving behaviour, such as understeer
and oversteer and helps to keep the vehicle
under control by manipulating the engine
output and applying the brakes at individual
wheels. Some noise may be generated when
the brakes are applied. The system is ready to
operate each time the engine is started
The symptoms were:
1. Initially a single thud or clunk from the rear end (like going over a "cats eye") when pulling away, between 5 and 10 miles per hour I think.
2. Then after about a week, 3 or 4 dull thuds or clunks inside about 1-1.5 seconds, the same "cats eye" type at the same kind of speed.
3. After about another 2-3 days I got the thuds and then a rumbling sound and slight feel of vibration. I didn't notice any degradation in performance.
So I trawled the forums for solutions and compiled a list of stuff I would check. The first and easiest was the drive shaft CV joints, there was nothing wrong with them.
While under the car, I happened to notice that the front left tyre looked low, I checked the pressure and sure enough it was at 1 bar.
I sorted out the tyre pressure and thereafter no clunking or rumbling.
Having had traction control kick in at low speed in the past due to rear bushes going bad, I came to the conclusion that the tyre issue was messing with the Traction Control or ABS. I looked into how the Traction Control system works and found the Dynamic Stability Control System description above. So for me it was a tyre issue, I don't know what else could bring in the DSC / Traction Control, bushes, etc?
