Clicking noise from gearstick (knob) when press brake in ‘P’ |
|
Just out of the blue... when in Park or Neutral - the round riser gearknob area clicks VERY loudly whenever I press OR release the brake.
I imagine it’s a shift lock mechanism of some sort - but why has it never made a noise - and then all of a sudden, it’s doing this? It is quite loud.
Is it time to get it booked in and looked at?

What exactly did they change under the warranty?

It's the shift lock mechanism and is there to lock the rotary shifter in P or N if you've not got your foot on the brake. It shouldn't be loud enough to be noticeable and you should only feel it faintly if you've got your hand on the shifter itself.
If it's too noisy, then get a dealer to look at it and see if they'll replace the whole mechanism under warranty. There's no user serviceable parts inside unfortunately. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Thank you. I’ve booked in Land Rover assist for tomorrow - and it will go to the dealer as a priority then.

Land Rover assist just attended and said that it’s not urgent.
I said that I go away in three days to France; and don’t want that knocking noise / risk of failure.
Useless. I truly don’t know why I bother with LR products. I’ve had rear diffs go, roof issues, electrics, paint issues; spanning three newish LR vehicles.
You’d think I’d have learnt by now.

If there are no fault codes present in the shifter and there's no loss of function, then they are correct, it's a customer annoyance, but not urgent. If your alternator had failed and was at risk of catching fire, I'd say it was urgent.
While it's making a noise, you know it's working, if it stops working then there's an issue and it becomes more urgent.

He didn’t check for fault codes...
He said worse case scenario is that the shifter locks in P. I’ll be half way up a mountain, in another country. So, the fact that, despite hard knocking sound; it still works... doesn’t fill me with confidence.
It’s typically LR; to say to just ignore such a thing and hope for the best...

So the dealer checked it and lo behold, a ton of fault codes. Still said warranty won’t cover it until it actually fails - I.e: I can’t physically drive the car. Given that I’m driving across Europe in it, I explained that I won’t wait for failure as I will be thousands of miles away should it go wrong.
So the dealer called the warranty company and explained that if they don’t cover it now, they will potentially get a bill that’s five times as much, given they will have to truck the car back from Italy / France or wherever... pay for accommodation, etc etc. So they decided to cover it and pay for the new part and labour.
It was a battle back and forth, but one worth fighting.

Mine is booked in on the 1st March due to the led ring round the rotary knob not lighting up, but in the meantime it locked in park and needed the codes cleared before it would move to drive. It done it again since I’ve left the codes there this time. Seems to be another weak point on the D4, more electronic hardware that can leave you stranded.

Yes, they say they’ve never seen it before... not much consolation. They said the same when I had my Discovery Sport and that got the dreaded ‘B pillar rattle’.

Mine does that on the 6 speed shifter and has done since I got the vehicle about 4 years ago. I think I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it now. Never had any problems with it. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten
