I was fairly sure this topic has been covered but couldnt find anything via the search, so............
The ali trim on my side steps need cleaning as they have loads of little black spots, almost like oil spots and discolouring. I have washed them, tried some CIF and a scouring pad, then some T-Cut, and whilst they are a lot cleaner I can seem to get the back to completely clean. It isnt just the balck spots there a sort of discolouring to the Ali as well.
What are folks using to get them looking like new?

I’ve used ..... Wonder Wheels, it fizzes on contact, I don’t leave it on long, but my God it removes the tarnish that white spirits, petrol, chrome cleaner, polish, WD40 wouldn’t look at, but done hold me responsible if it ruins your side steps.

^This. I mixed it with white vinegar (the cleaning variety not culinary) and used it to clean up the steps which came fitted to my current Landmark before they were removed to fit on the HSE Lux that was owned by RedMerle. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

OK Chaps, a few chioces there, I think I'll try Trailhounds suggestion first, as I think alloy wheel cleaner will be a bit too strong. I get the impression that the Ali on the side steps is a bit soft.

so tied the vinegar/washng powder mix - a bit better, then tried the Barkeepers Friend, a bit better still, but it looks like the Ali has discoloured in places and this looks patchy now. Not sure I can get them back to looking like new

I should have said that I applied the barkeepers/white vinegar mix with a non-stick pan scourer and had to apply quite a bit of pressure using circular motions for it work really well.
Good luck. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

LT. Yes I also used the bar keepers friend like that with a scourer. It's certainly better so I might give it another go. It may need a few attempts.

You could try the alloy cleaner on an inconspicuous part first?

Plasti-coat in Black. Fit and forget. Until strip falls off, that is. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Mine had tarnished slightly and someone on here recommended Autosol, and they came up an absolute treat. Just apply with an old tea towel.
