Keep the bodywork very well lubricated with water and possibly a very small amount of car shampoo. Do not let it dry out, and don't apply much pressure, just gently work over the area you're interested in.
It helps to have a spray bottle or similar handy to keep the surface wet
As Martin says a spray bottle is an essential (spray as you go)
How old is your car?
If it is fairly new I would only clay bar as the start of a thorough polish process in which case wash the car with a strong mix of washing up liquid first to 'kill' the existing wax.
If it is a very recent car I would not clay bar, it shouldn't need it.
The Zaino polish system is bar far the best I have ever used, they also have a clay bar as part of their range.Zermatt silver 06 reg.
I've used a Mother's Clay Bar, which works very well indeed.
They recommend that you use one of the "Quick Detailer" type products. I've used Mother's Showtime Instant Detailer, Meguiars Quik Detailer and AutoGlym Instant Show Shine. I found the AutoGlym the best, as with most of the products.
