He's bang on right about Porsche Boxster Syndrome. They just show you can't afford a 911. Not convinced you can extend the analogy to the D4 vs FFRR

It seems to me that JC finds it congenitally impossible to change his mind. He makes his mind up in an instant - then if he has any doubts about the view he has just taken, he simply reinforces his original view using more and more extreme iterations of it. Its quite entertaining, but vaguely wearing after a while. And its not great journalism (does JC even claim to be a journalist these days ?) as the only thing it excels in is biggotry.

As ever - there is a single valid point at the heart of JC's article (albeit masked in much rehetoric and the verbal equivalent of a runny nose) - which is that the D4 has gone well up market and arguably left a big gap in that market. But with Nissan pushing out £20k vehicles with 4 wheel drive and up to 7 seats - I guess LR had to take the D4 up market to avoid getting into a price war that it could never win.

What is exciting though - would be the thought that moving the D4 up market leaves a space for a new Defender - which will go back to basics, albeit on a very clever D3 platform, and be a supreme utilitarian, mutliple configeration, all rounder which can take a sheep to market in the morning and collect the kids from school in the afternoon. I live in hope.

I read this last night when it first went up, and decided to "stew" on it over night before I commented.

I can affford a FFRR, but it hasnt got 7 seats, so no use to me as a father of 6. Dont neccesarily disagree with the comment about the Porsche, but JC has a propensity to tar with just the one brush.

I looked at the XC90 and found that I just didnt like it, it felt low on power and will only legally tow 2250 kgs so not only sluggish, but in the real world no good for the times when I have to tow something heavy long distance. I have the 90 for local work, but towing a digger more than 50 miles I'll take the D3 every day. The XC90 has a higher top speed, but only about 6 mph so nothing in it really from that perspective.

I for one am delighted with my choice of car and next year will be replacing the D3 with a D4, it is a master of all trades and jack of none.

That said though, I still stand by my recommendations of JC for PM!

In the same way, it’s impossible to drive a Discovery without thinking of the Range Rover. I’m not talking about the (ghastly) Range Rover Sport but what I call the “proper” Range Rover — aka the best car in the world.

Someone needs to introduce JC to the term Full Fat Range Rover Laughing

JC is Censored off that he went and spent a fortune on a fast depreciating RR a few months ago, when a D4 drives the same, is as luxurious as his Range Rover for 17K less and offers the 7 the seats and space as his XC90. What he failed to point out is the RR is much older tech than the Disco. Smart Choice JC

looked at the XC90 rear seats. Couldnt get in without removing a limb and bolting several vertebrae together. Only fo rthe little people.

In the D4 we test drove, managed to get a 2m tall giant in the back, he said he had plenty of room so I didnt bury him in the nearby beckoning forest. Arent I good Mr. Green
