Chip tuning 'v' remap - which is best? |
|
Ok - so I have read lots about the remap and even had it done on my TD5 and was VERY pleased with it.
However, there are several plug in chip boxes available now that seem to offer similar benefits and include mapping software rather than just resistor or increasing the fuel pressure rail pressure or injection duration.
Does anyone have any experience of these, which seem to be cheaper at about £350 - or is it a case of you get what you pay for?
I was thinking about this one:- http://dieseltuning.co.uk/landrover-diesel-tuning.html
Anyone used them?
Thanks
Jon

I am sure TFC or Chris will come up with a better description but....
When I had my TD5 done by Gary Wood of Td5Alive he described how each type works. If you get a plug in box they typically read the output of the ECU and 'increase' the fuelling based on a map in the chip, which gived the desired extra boost, but can cuase problems on the ovverun and at times when you might not want an extra gob of fuel going through the system. Also they generally do not intercept any of the sensor signals coming back in, which may give sign of a problem that extra fuelling would make worse.
Chipping the ECU memory adds a new programme directly into the ECU, and so all the protection circuitry and feedback loops are all in place and undisturbed, the engine just gives more power when needed. Hence you can have a tune for outright power, low down torque etc etc.
The other problem with the boxes is some of them are not really made of automitive spec parts so have a tendency to leak, overheat, melt, and shake themseves to pieces. With chipping you are just adding software to already proven hardware.
Finally most (good/reputable) dealers have no problem with you chipping a tdv6 as far as warranty is concerned (I know of at least 2 branches of $trat$tone that wil do it to your new car as part of the PDI), but I doubt they would say the same if there was evidence of a piggy back box being used. Who else is in the field? |
|
Thanks, Adiver for bringing up the question.
Craig - Gary Woods' explanation makes sense.
SOOOoooooo What are the choices? TorqTune and Turbochip seem to have a lot of happy customers.
1. IS there anyone else in the field/market with similar customer satisfaction?
2. Is there one product less likely to upset the warranty?
3. What do normal insurers say about re-mapping
4. What excess do specialist insurers put on top?

Craig S-L wrote:I am sure TFC or Chris will come up with a better description no more to add in terms of how it works (although it's not an extra programme - more a partial re-write of the original) Clearly, Torq-Tune, Turbochip, etc. have different maps and methods of applying it leading to the difference in additional torque at the wheels, 'driveability' and 'feel'. A remap works with the manufacturers engine control, wheras in most cases, a plug-in seeks to fool it....
your choice

Do any re-map companies issue a technical specification of the product?
Internet searches are unrewarding. How can one compare them without driving one of each?

Quite happy to provide a dynograph, although the raw numbers are only part of the 'specification' a lot of time has gone into developing the 'feel' and 'driveability' of Torq-Tune although there doesn't seem to be a 0-10 scale for there parameters yet
If you can get a drive in a remapped equivalent vehicle with the remaps your interested in, the difference will be clear

If we get a spare 10 minutes on Sunday Andy, you can have a drive of mine. It's had the TorqTune treatment.
Have to admit, the first few days i had it i was underwhelmed (sorry 10 ), as i was expecting "balls out performance" on my 4 mile trips in traffic to Tesco's and round to my sisters...
but today i did my first 250 mile round trip and i can now understand the difference that the tune gives me even with expedition rack and MTR's my MPG has gone up and i had more "oomph" to overtake other vehicles.
Anyway, the offers there if you want to drive mine (tuned) and compare performance to your vehicle
See you Sunday

a. Yes please
b. With your knowledge of those going to Tong on Sunday ( ) - are there representatives of both/several camps?
I take the point very seriously that the feel and the personal suitability of a system outplay the raw data. For the most part I would be happy with the take-off given by the "sand" terrain response. Twice I have "floored it" to get out of someone else's b s-up situation, to be met with what seems like the response from the engine-room telegraph on the Titanic ("Iceberg ahead!!!!!" - "Sorry we're busy with the deck-chairs...").
Safety first, sparkling fun second, economy third, more torque would be a welcome gilded lily, no puffs of smoke would be nice.

There will be a Torq-Tune 'before and after' there as well - not sure if auto or manual though...
