As Robbie says if the oil needs topping up after 600 miles it's not right. Is there a leak?
Not had any experience of of lots of oil being burnt so can't comment if so

On the petrol tank cap it shows a sign of oil every 600 miles.

we bought a new d4 last September...starting at just 10 miles on the clock...was surprised to see we used oil for the first 6 months...which apparently is NORMAL...think we got though 2 litres in about 5k miles...now only 8300

I'm less than a thousand miles from the first service- not put a drop of oil in it yet.
Had a few German products which have used stupid amounts of oil for tens of thousands of miles = pain in the butt! enquired with Merc if they where filling it up when serviced as I had to add litres between services. MY14 post man pat van

Not a lot of faith in this system.
Current D4 spent 5 days in garage when the yellow warning lights came on saying not working every now and then. Apparently oil leaking into the oil sensor harness and had to be replaced.
First D4 said it required 2 litres to top up after 10k, thought it seemed a lot so only put 1 litre in and re checked, spot on.
Wonder if if it shows it has been overfilled at all.
Due to this experience only top up by 100ml at a time now, luckily does not use muchD4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

2 litres would be a lot so the caution was wise. The warning 'under-filled' is triggered when the engine requires 1.5 litres or more and the graduations on the dash min-to-max is also 1.5 litres. I had thought that the largest request the system can ask for was also 1.5 litres.
There is also an overfill warning should you add too much; clearly don't drive or start the engine if it is showing overfilled.

In my experience with the 3.0v6 Diesel engine in Jags I would say it does use oil
I had an 18k mile one that belonged to Jag and was slightly overdue a service and when I checked the levels it took two litres what surprised me most was that there was no warning about the oil level on startup.
My own high mileage XJL has required occasional top ups when on dealer fill oil but not when it has had Shell Ultra 5w30 C1 and not so far with the Mobil 1 ESP C3
The Jag I am using this week is a 63 plate with 15k and the oil level is just under the middle on the "dipstick" so would likely take half a litre to get it to the top of the dipstick.
All cars use oil some more than others hence why the need for low SAPS oils to protect the DPF.
The fact that PSA who make the engine advise a C3 with higher HTHS may possible be relevant.
Though it needs to be factored in the engine temp and therefore oil temp when levels are checked and also the angle the car is sitting at
At the moment with over 100k the engine in my XJL uses no oil

Bigjl, the 3.0 and 2.7 engine before it are not made by PSA. PSA was heavily involved in the design and development of these engines and indeed used them in a variety of their vehicles, however the engines are built by Ford at Dagenham and Ford ultimately owns the design.

I stand corrected.
Though i should point out that I was perfectly happy with a PSA engine as the French have always made decent diesels since the days of the XUD lump
