SHMBO has decided we need to get a couple of bikes.
Is there a 2 bike carrier that fits onto a removable tow ball and doesn't need all the hassle of another numberplate board with all the required electrics etc?
ie. I'm thinking that if the disco's numberplate and lights are visible, then it'll be legal? I'm not thinking of long journey's… just some way of legally moving them around locally.
Alternatively, is there a roof mounting system that doesn't need a ladder? I doubt SHMBO would reach! Sorry for the silly questions... not something I've considered for my disco before.

I've got a THULE one, its a two bike fitment and has all the cabling and lights required by law, all you need to is fit a number plate, Only dead fish go with the Flow !

Wont that one obsure the lights/number plate, certainly over here it would make the rozzers day as they would be issuing on the spot fines for that.
We solved the problem by getting folding bikes that fit in the boot no problem

Yes, they would here too... I was hoping not to have to fit the electrics etc as this makes the total cost more than the bikes!
In the states I've seen versions that support the bikes upright rather than across the back of the car... vertically if you like. I was thinking this would be okay as you can still see plates and lights, but I can't find anything that looks like this in the UK?

Nice job... but in the UK we'd still have to fit electrics and numberplate for that design to be legal. For occasional use, I think I'm heading for a roof mount solution just to keep it simple. Just have to remember headroom at car parks etc. predict I'll forget at some point.

not a problem find a cheap set of trailer lights & whack them on.

I've got the Thule 970 and it's a great bit of kit. Fits in seconds, folds and pops in the boot taking up little space and I don't think it obscures lights or numberplate. At least I don't think it does have a prob with the numberplate I'm sure I checked when we originally got it! Bike mounts pretty low and rear wheel was below numberplate.
Only has two drawbacks... First, the uprights are about 1.5" too long and stop you opening the upper tailgate. Second, and probably more of an issue is that the handlebars on bike nearest the car hit the vertical tailgate and make it really problematic plus pedals foul on the big bumper. Probably not an issue on any other car (I recommended to a friend and she loves it). But on a Disco, this really makes it a one bike rack.
