Chassis: Why did LR change this & can I chop it off?

IIRC early D3s had a slightly different design for the body mount behind the front wheel?? They allowed for bigger wheels without rubbing. I assume this later mount is stronger but the downside is, it sticks about an inch into the wheel arch.

As you can see, my 285/60r18's rub a little. Can anyone give me a reason not to cut this bit back a bit and plate it up?

That’s a tidy looking chasis.

I had a similar issue when I took my 285/50/20s off my D3 to fit to my first D4.
I took this issues to Prospeed (down the road from me at the time) to see if it could be cut off.
Rather than cutting, they came up with the solution of manufacturing "lock stops" to fit in the steering rack.
The stops just reduce the lock to lock steering application.
It worked for me and they had since added these as an item for sale.
Slight downside was that if entering a std supermarket car parking slot, it would take you two goes to get in rather than the one.

On my current D4, I've just gone down a tyre size and running 275/45/20 rather than adding lock stops.

Btw, the chassis extrusion was added to prevent the front wheel entering the cabin on a frontal impact.

So your insurance might have something to say if you lop it off and then have a serious accident Embarassed

I don't think so. We're not talking about cutting the whole outrigger off, just the protrusion, which (from the sounds of things) will be rewelded again Thumbs Up

That prospeed solution might be something I look into anyway. I'm not sure what's going on but my steering lock seems to be too good. I've snapped a CV full lock reverse and gave the new one a crunch in the same way. Something to investigate another time.

As for insurance, I don't think it's any different to a repair etc. Always worth thinking about though.

Larger Turning Radii

I think I would try anothing other than limiting my turning radii. That's one of the best things, IMO about our vehicles. Nothing like the look on someones face when that big mother turns on a dime.
Had a ford 250 crew cab, work truck and hated it due to needing hell's half acre to turn it or park. Not sure how you would "test" a larger radius but you may want to think about it before limiting it, unless this is something that can be removed if you don't like.
