Little update and I apologise that this is starting to turn into a blog!
Managed to get under the car this afternoon for five minutes and checked the voltage being put out by the alternator. Seemed a fairly healthy 14.2v which fluctuated but only upwards, never below the 14.2v. Sounds normal, doesn't it?
Despite this, it would only read 13.5v across the battery terminals with the engine running.
I have ordered a new Exide battery to see if that is something to do with it.

Well, it has been a strangle couple of months with even more unexplained events. Alarm going off randomly and the battery going flat almost overnight which led to the family being stranded in Centre Parcs.
I had concerns that the original alternator was faulty so a new one ordered from AF and a higher rated battery.
Steps taken:
1. Fan removed
2. 3 bolts holding alternator removed
3. Live feed removed
4. Alternator out
Now the eagle eyed of you may have spotted a missing step. The plug for the lead to the control module was still plugged in despite the alternator being out of the car. Looks like the lead somehow corroded and broke.
10p connector and 4" of wire later, the original alternator and battery were re-fitted. Lo and behold....no warning light.
Another positive was that the heated screens and seats are now back to working. I suspect that they draw so much power, they are designed to not activate of there is a charging issue.
Decision time now...do I keep it or move on from 10 years of LR ownership?!
Just want to say a massive thank you to all who chipped in with advice and help. Hopefully this will also help someone out one day
