Situation is now officially bonkers! The car is completely dead. I went to get a briefcase from the bbot and it won't open with the key fob.

Don't get this at all.

Looks like I've won that prize as well. Managed to get into the car using key entry on the passenger side and popped the bonnet. Bit of an electrical burning smell in there between the fan and the engine - I assume that's where the alternator is. Gutted about the battery though. For it to be completely dead when 5 minutes earlier it had been tested and was deemed fine is a bit of a disappointment. I'll see what my mechanic mate says tomorrow - after he's stopped laughing that is.

My Disco is still dead on my drive. I had the mechanic pop round today to try to recover the car back to his garage (he doesn't have a recovery vehicle). He rocked up with one of them boost/charger packs but the Disco didn't twitch. He then jump started it off a Nissan 4x4 truck thing which fired up the disco instantly but as soon as the jump leads were disconnected the car died. He then decided to take the battery back to his workshop and use some top notch recovery charger on the battery to juice it up enough to cover the half mile journey. The battery was dead and could not be recovered so he had another large battery in the workshop which he topped up for a couple of hours before trying it out on the Disco. This failed. The subsequent jump start worked but the car wouldn't run using this battery.

I'm on the lowest RAC cover known to mankind which means they want to charge me £85 for a half mile tow. The local tow truck company usually do it for around £60 but they have been un-contactable all after noon. It's in Neutral at the moment.

(1) Would towing the car to the garage for half a mile knacker it in any way? I know that some 4x4s aren't happy with this.
(2) Anything else I should try?

cant yer tech fit an alternator and battery on yer drive?

BTW if yer going to jump start any modern vehicle with an ECU, might want to make sure the side lights are on before connecting to the decent power source

Thumbs Up

Also don't mean to hi-jack but did you read my post today about handbook instructions to disconnect battery whilst charging ... and see what bother that has got me into with my remote fobs stopping working....
Looks like you can get stuffed either way if your Disco3 battery goes flat Evil or Very Mad
