changing Nav software on MY2013 |
|
OK, so having covered some miles in my new D4 2013, I realise that the sat nav is woeful. The worst part about it is that it cannot calculate the Time of Arrival correctly. Putting it in a head to head with my TomTom I realise quite how good the TomTom is and quite how bad the LR navigation is.
Very long shot, but has anyone ever changed the Navigation on the LR to another software - ie to TomTom? If you did, what's the process?

Doubt it as it's an integrated system e.g. secondary display in the dash and other references with the home display and telephone use.
Strange that you find it that bad ...I've done 3k and think it's a vast improvement over previous years. Can't say I use the ETA though ...I'm a "I'll get there when I get there" type tbh 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I find it ok, but again, the time of arrival is not as good as TT. I find the process of entering an address tedious on the D4. It is very slow to take the input characters. The routing is better though, and I have yet to explore the 'Learning' feature.
Or am I missing something?

I'm only two days into my first D4 but I have to agree with this and I don't find the process very intuitive, needing too many button presses to get a new destination working. I'm sure I will get used to it.

aha....need to investigate that more. Haven't yet done much with that yet apart from plug in "phone home"
I think it's all about what you are used to. The TomTom is a better system. If you've never experienced either TomTom or Garmin then you won't know what you're missing. Having said that, I will go back to the D4 Sat Nav System and try harder....to like it....

When you consider how good and cheap after market satnavs are (live traffic speed cameras live updates )
you have to conclude the following for all car makers :-
1. they don't try nearly hard enough
2. they are 'a nice little earner' when not specced as an accessory
I use car and aftermarket sat navs with different map views, but the TomTom with live traffic and cameras is indespensible for my work travelling, very accurate on arrival times Illegitimi Non Carborundum

Don't forget that development cycles are much longer for integrated navigation systems so they will always be behind standalone sat nav devices. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I was an early adopter of TomTom right back in the Compaq PDA days and have had many units including their latest machines so I am well versed with their operation. Don't get me wrong ...they are great machines for what they do
Maybe I'm just very forgiving but I don't see the problem with the Discovery systems and particularly this latest version which I find excellent....I accept that TomTom being portable and having seemingly weekly software updates is going to have an advantage over OEM systems ...but TomTom don't \ can't provide the level of integration and they are a pain in the backside when it comes to fitting them in and out of the windscreen all the time.
I guess we all have differing expectations 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

And they keep getting nicked
I agree, TT is excellent, indeed I have one for use in all my vehicles, my lads can borrow it, my wife can put it in her Fiat or Defender, I use it at work when I take the Galaxy. It is great, but needs fitting/ removing, and there are wires dangling across the dashboard.
For an integrated solution, with maximum convenience, the D4 system is great. I also think the D4 POI list for golf clubs is better than TT, more than once TT has taken me to an empty field that is supposed to be a golf club.

The system on current car is excellent in that you speak to a person, tell them the destination and they transmit data to the car that program's the sat nav. Jeremy Clarkson used a similar system in a Lexus recently on TG.
Sorry this isn't LR but its evidence of value added service over what the TomToms can offer. SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE

We have found that over time our MY2011 D4 Sat Nav has become pretty accurate in ETAs although it may take a few minutes to calculate and of course will change depending on your speeds and pauses.
I love its motorway functions such as listing exits and service areas coming up and its three route offer function plus its route reviews
However when I have the caravan on the back I us a Garmin Dezl which is designed for HGV s and you set up the vehicle with sizes such as width and height and its mapping has HGV sensitive data so it will avoid areas that you vehicle can not or should not go to - otherwise it is operated the same as a Nuvi - they are not cheap BUT nor is taking your air-con unit off the roof going under a low bridge! LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

The MY2013 is so much better than the previous (MY10).
I love the split screen - had that on my Merc and it allows me to plan stops and know where the hell I am on a bland motorway, My Garmin wont do this.
And as said, the Voice is Brill - I use it for Get me Home. works great and no ages reading rubbish like I did in the Merc. Even picks up West country on first attempt - cant be bad.
And also as said, the benefit over not haveing to take the thing off the window and clean the ring off every time is worth the hassle.
BTW - I never use ETA on the LR D4 HSE - Aintree Green
D4 Orkney my13 - gone
Stornaway D4. Gone, Didn't like it at all
D3 silver manual. Loved my first LR

You haven't met my wife...
The voice thing has passed me by, didn't realise that the Sat Nav can be controlled by voice. This car is so many leagues above what I had before, I'm still excited by heated seats, so as for having a conversation with it, that kinda blows my mind...

It's called "Say what you see" ...and it is very good for a number of the vehcile features including the nav ...even understands my dulcet Welsh tones ....isn't it 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
