Here is a good rewiew. Senter of oilfilter is clean oil to the galery and ends in the sump. Priming the pump that way won't work.

oilpump year; leake behind timing cover

Hi all,

just joined the forum and posted a welcome message. Hope someone can help me with a few questions:

My Disco is a 2006 (VIN 6A). The other day I removed the timing cover to have a look ( also to check if belt had been changed).

Is the year of make upsite down on 2006 oilpumps? Looks like 09 to me which would be odd. It certainly doesnt look like the reinforced oilpump.

While having the cover removed I notice that oil must have leaked somewhere. I just cant imagine from where. Is seems to have leaked across the whole front. Moslty around the center idler pulley. The previous owner mentioned that there was a leak from the oil filter housing at some point from not tightening it correctly. I had noticed some fresh oil before on the right top aux tensioner when I replaced it once I had removed it from the timing cover. I dont really loose oil between oil changes.

Could you also quickly confirm that the cambelt was changed (judging from color of the belt and date on tensioner?

That looks like the old style weak oil pump to me.

Ok thanks. Why would the date stamp say 9 on a 2006 car? Or just up site down?

It would still be worth changing as a 2009 will only have the 13mm pump even if it has the later casting, the new ones have a 15mm gear

Will do it. I already got the new pump. Sourcing the oil seal at the moment. Frankly a bit hesitant with that part of the crankshaft bolt. I am worried to mess up the timing. I have a Chinese locking kit. Hope it will hold.

Any idea about source of the oil leak?

Oil leak most likely the crankshaft oil seal which you will be replacing anyway…

No its not needed, but if you want to use some then no problem, I always use grease and have done from the start.
Remember be careful fitting the crank seal.

Hi Flack, instead of using the sealant could you tell me which grease to use on the gaskets?
Many thanks in advance
Kris.

@Bxosy I just use normal grease, the same stuff I use for the battery terminals, it's a bluey colour .

I use it just to make sure the Oil pump slides over the lower seal and not mark or tear it, from new the oil pump is not fitted with sealent.

Hi guys, I’ve just removed the oil pump ready for the new pump and the bottom gasket that the pump is drawn down on to looks to be quite flat, would the grease method still be advised or should I use the sealant method?

I’m glad I’m changing the pump due to other maintenance cos it’s the old style pump that ain’t reinforced so could of broke at any time I suppose 😬 my D3 is a 05 plate with about 137,000 that I’ve owned for about 8 years.
