I got bought poly bushes for my d3 from advanced factors front and rear. Then got 4 wheel alignment done. Last year that. The drive is still superb.

After I've changed the upper and lower arms I'm going to overhaul the ARB's I think. Hoping it will drive a lot better after! Also getting 4 new boots put on when I get it 4 wheel aligned too!

The rear upper bushings also take a pounding. It might be worth a check before the 4wheel alignment.
It cost me £90 for the 4wheel alignment. I wouldn't wanna pay twice.
On my 2005 d3 125,000 miles. The upper fronts and lower rears were a pass for a MOT but the upper rears and lower fronts were both shot and it wondered all over the road. It was awful. And a fail on a MOT for sure.
I replaced my own. (Never again) lol. Hopfully the polybushes are for life.

Did you replace ARB's at the same time?
Do ARB's have an effect on alignment if changed?

No, it wouldn't have an affect on the wheel alignment

My recently acquired D3 (2006) knocks over speed bumps and also if I break suddenly at low speeds.
I had to have the car back for them to replace the intercooler and cambelt and got them to check for the knocking noise. They took it to an MOT testing centre who a) said it would easily pass its MOT and b) put it up on a ramp and said there was no visible issues.
The knocking is still there (seems to go if suspension is raised). Is this most like the ARB and/or lower arms?

Take the D3 out onto a quiet road . Drive normally and then brake hard . If the front ARBs are shot you will hear a "clunk". Time to replace. Do a search on here .Plenty of "how to" with good photos. Did mine on the drive way. Swear box only collected a few pounds unlike the time I replaced the front hubs.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. John - hard breaking at speed doesn't create any sound. But if I am doing 5-10mph and keep on tapping the brakes it is then I get the knocking

Front lower arms suspect, check the rear bush in the lower arms, you may see 'contact' marks where the arm is touching the mounting as the bush has collapsed thus giving you the 'clunk' when dabbing the brakes at low speed such as you describe

Yep, front arms. Swap the ARB bushes first as this is easy job and may fix it but otherwise get a set of arm from AF and block out a weekend

Agree with the body of the kirk it's the lower arms that are the culprits. Change both then get the 4 wheel alignment done (Hunter equipment). Don't faff about trying to change out bushes etc just get new arms and bolts from Advanced. Plenty of "how to" on here with photos. Using a grinder/reciprocating saw makes removing the arms and bolts a lot easier. Remember to empty the swear box before startingOnce you have defeated the idiots any job is half done.
