Centre diff lock
Hi guys
Hopping there may be some answers, I have tried searching the site with no answers that I can find
I work as a BORDA instructor and have driven and taught in most 4x4s but in truth never a D3 D4s yes, most vehicles we use are on road tyres, and this time of year our site is very very slippery, our site vehicles are D1s with badly worn tyres.
Questions
I can’t lock my diff, in rock crawl. It locks but as soon as I move it un locks,
On hard slippery climbs the traction control works as it should and the diff may lock or may not.
It seems to prefer traction control to diff locking.
Down hill diff won’t lock at all. HDC is of no use, on most of our site as it just locks the wheels and we toboggan to the bottom.
I can get any of the pickups D1 with road tyres around the site except for the steep climbs as you would expect. D4s also do most of the site although they don’t like the side slopes due to there weight.
But my D3 needs to be thrown at everything can’t creep it round at all.
I feel that the diff needs to lock sooner.
Has anyone any ideas?Discovery 3 HSE 07

Has your D3 got a rear locking diff. It makes very little difference whether you’ll get there, but without one the ABS sensors have to pick up quite a bit of difference in wheel speed before TC brakes the spinning one.

The diff locks variably on and off as required ..in low range, rock crawl, 1st, it will come on when you slowly move off, but it may not stay on all the time even in that TR setting.
The application of traction control and diff locking is like no older traditional 4x4 ...you don't drive it like a defender or older disco ...if you are an instructor then it may be best to go to someone like Protrax and they will give you very specific training on the D3\4 capability.

Good old vince lol
The D4 is quite a bit different a lot more refined the TC is a lot smother and doesn’t require the same amount of throttle to hold the wheels when they spin, as I said the diff lock seems very lazy when I get home I will put it on rollers and see how much rotation I get before it locks, but I have a feeling it comes in to late.
What would be nice to be able to select diff lock.
Land Rover over the years have refined the TC quiet abit the D2 need a fair amount of throttle to operate the D3 was a lot better and the D4 very smooth and active, if you jump in a Defender with TC it’s much like the D2 aggressive but not needing as much throttle. The trouble with high throttle use to get TC to work it almost defeats itself in very slippery conditions when you end up with all 4 wheels spinning.
Ps I was training long before protrax decided to move from just play days, he’s done a great job of marketing he’s business
Think I need to get another D3 longside see if they act the same, trouble is not many guys like to off road there pride and joyDiscovery 3 HSE 07

A lot of us have ...and in some of the most extreme conditions .
The issue is it's such a step up in technology that if you don't know how works then you might just carry on fighting it without being able to take advantage of it ....it's extremely capable

Yes the videos are showing the disco on elephant foot prints at east Well manor which is the old Land Rover site at Ashford they are demonstrating on the slight down hill section which shows off the Land Rover traction control, which works very well and is working on my car, but is pretty useless in very slippery conditions where the diff lock gives you a better chance.
I now have recalibrated the transfer box, no faults, but live values don’t show any voltage change.
On rollers it appears to work but can’t add any power as the traction control kicks in.
Going to try again off road with live values.
Have tried looking at the W/S manual but only description of how it works mechanicly no testing infoDiscovery 3 HSE 07
