Never realised a number plate could cause so much distress to so many.
I don't think it's distress as such, more annoyance that the design really isn't very good and looks rubbish. That could be forgiven, at least by me, if it was a replacement for the D4. Sadly, it's not (for my needs) and that's why I bought a used Landmark earlier this year instead of a new D5 to replace my smashed up Landmark that I'd bought new last year. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

By no means the D5's biggest failing in my book but the rear end does not look good IMHO, this is a clever insert that does improve the aesthetics to me. Just need a coach builder to raise the roofline and add a proper split tailgate MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

That’s what I’m getting at, there are other things that need improving but most people seem focused on the position of the number plate. The D5 is by no means a bad car but there are areas that need improving.
I’m enjoying mine at the moment, had a few build quality issues but I think we’re over that now. Hopefully. Even treated it to a full wash and polish.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

People focus on it because it's the focal point of the rear of the car and it looks So it's always going to be commented on and discussed.
As I said, I could live with it were it not for the other compromises. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I'm sure it is technically very capable and an improvement on the D4,
but...........
Overall it is still a hideous looking car, so bad that I bought one of the last D4's rather than a D5. The proportions of the back end are awful, the front looks like the cartoon of a fat guy with his belt up round his nipples, I found it awkward getting in and out of the drivers seat because of the design, why on earth spend that amount on a car that you think is just pig ugly.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

That's new!
The number plate mount is a big improvement, but it has a downside; untreated number plates draw attention away from that back bumper and now, without that distraction, the rear bumper/nappy really stands out as looking deformed! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Not quite sure get the nipples reference
To me I think the size of the plate is the key. The UK plates in general ain’t pretty.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
