There may be water ingress around the windscreen scuttle area - plenty of threads on here about ways to cure it.

On mine it led to a soaked pollen filter and damp footwell but caught before anything serious.

You can take the battery out easily - make sure you let the car go to "sleep" before you disconnect it. The battery is heavy - around 20kg IIRC - so wear a truss... Thumbs Up

Thanks. I replaced the scuttle panel as the old one warped and not clipping down properly, although pollen filter dry fortunately. I’ll try and find a relevant topic. The water is getting under the bonnet seal after sitting on top of the plenum panel and tracking on the loom behind the main fuse box.

There's a thread on here about removing rear air con, the disconnect of the pipes is in a similar area. If you search for that, there's some good info about how to remove stuff in that corner. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the tips people.
Took car to local specialist after dismantling all the connectors behind the battery box and opened up bcm and ecu connectors. Some oxidation on bcm connectors so gave a clean and reconnected. Checked Central junction box, all felt dry and properly connected.
Garage read the computer, found similar errors and decided after checks that the battery was shot and put in a new Bosch one. I assumed the battery wasn’t the underlying cause as I had similar problems with both batteries. Anyhoo, they reset everything and car is now sorted. I was initially concerned that perhaps they haven’t found an underlying problem, but so far so good(2 days). All the hdc errors etc have gone. It literally feels like a mew car, firmer suspension, smoother engine and punchier brakes. Cool!
Current theory water ingress and could weather finished off battery, but now dried out so happy after reset and new battery.
Only fly in ointment is glitches in driver door lock, so maybe I will need to replace it after all, although I want to as if car is sorted for a couple of weeks first! Rather surprised both my batteries had same problem.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

And.....back to square one again! Managed 48 hours and car won’t start again with ‘vehicle fault- system shutdown’ back on the stereo. 😢

Good evening all, i am in desperate need of some assistance please on anyone who perhaps knows and understands Landrover discovery 3. I have a 2006 Hse 2.7 v6 diesel. Early december i was going to go to work, my vehicle was dead. I went and purchased a new battery, placed the battery in, waited a few minutes, all lights came on, no swinging of the engine. The various codes came up, lost communication, check engine, there is big F in the display, on the left where thwre are 2 see through gauges, one flickers red. I took the vehicle to my mechanic, he replaced the battery terminals, had the ecu, bcu and gearbox ecu checked for errors, all came back fine. In theory the vehicle is fine but still nothing. Before i spend anymore money i am hoping someone on this forum could perhaps provide some insight where i, not a mechanic, could look and see where a wire may be loose, perhaps chood by a unsuspecting mouse etc. What i am been told is that what it is but will take 20 hours of man hours to find this mystery wire. Thanks to anyone please who can help me please.

Remove the battery and check the wiring plugs behind it

I feel your pain! Got my car back from the garage, they don’t know what’s wrong but best guess is try replacing BCU. Be about a £1000 with no guarantee:-( So, back to disconnecting battery for ten minutes each time I want to use the car. It is now quite dry. All the connectors look clean.
Out of interest are there any wires in the sill area of the disco 3 that could cause these symptoms?

Have you checked the earthing wire harness under the plastic wheel arch inner cover on the right hand side of the car ? Behind the front right wheel arch trim is a big black earth wire, if you can’t see where it bolts to the chassis follow the wire frame the starter motor to the chassis and it then bolts to the wing. It earths in them 2 places so take them off, clean them and cover them in copper grease and re tighten them
Hopefully this is your issue as I had intermittent stating and I narrowed it down to the earth cable
Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Is there anybody of nolegible LR technitians, hobists, engineers and or entusiast who is
willing to open Pandoras box and talk about "System shut down"; what kind of procedure is that, what are the causes, triggers, scenarios, why it is embeded in vehicle....and stop people replacing still good bateries, alternators, cleaning numeros contacts and or help people to find nolegible specialist who can sort out issue while enjoying coffe.

Hi Noar,

After having to diagnose the 'Christmas tree' problem myself I've come to the conclusion that there is no simple solution.

There are a few 'cheap' things you can try first - brake light switch, check connector in rear wheel arch, check connections behind battery, check battery (and replace if needed).

In my case it was corrosion in the TCM connector on the transmission, discovered when I moved the wiring and set off the cascade failure. Once I had found what it was and could replicate the issue was fairly easy to do Whistle

I found this document very helpful as it highlights stuff you can ignore initially when trying to diagnose the fault: https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us..._Codes.pdf

To go further with discussion problem should be clarified as System shutdown or multiple cascading error something else. For me Christmas tree is is phrase brought by non educated mechanics, in order to emphasize their work, in same box goes: computer on wheels, jumping errors, pure wiring car, bad connections system and so on. to help people understand problem, problem should be defined correctly.
