Just had the June edition of Car magazine - it has a group test of Disco v X5 v Merc ML v Cayenne. Disco comes out on top.

It's not on line and will never be, as Car never post group tests on line. An interesting test, in that reckons Cayenne better than new ML and X5 both on-road and off-road!

Reasonable write-up, fairly complimentary about the Disco. Good to see the Disco finally being tested against the right peer group - used to be mainly compared to the baby Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The D4 really should be tested against the big daddy Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol.
A pity they did not test the petrol engine v8's - would love to see how that shootout would play out?
Also would be good to see a bit more analysis than a day in the dirt getting mud all over. Very few owners would ever do that to their cars. More likely to make an overland trip somewhere remote, possibly towing a loaded camping trailer or even maybe a caravan?
The ultimate shootout would be to test a fleet of LR4 / Cayenne / ML / X5 / Patrol / Land Cruiser - both diesel and petrol engines for each - over an extended period (overland trip), to see what its really like living with each vehicle, including input from the passengers big and small. Don't allow an inanimate object to outwit you.
