Car Diagnostics
Evening All,
Well finally took our new purchase into our local garage to get it checked over before towing the caravan at the weekend.
Lo and behold it came back with 57 faults the most severe being the clutch is slipping, unable to list them all as the garage were unable to connect it to their PC.
The advice I'm on asking for as I'm a diagnostic tool virgin, is that once we take the car back to the car garage we bought it from and they put it onto their diagnostic tool if they were to clear the faults and say it was all fixed and we then took it back to our garage would the faults still register on their diagnostic tool or once they are cleared is that it cleared for good?
Thanks in advance

If you clear the codes they’ll vanish unless a trigger reappears and then it’ll show up as new.
Probably doesn’t help you right now but pictures taken with a cell phone are almost as good as a direct dump-to-email like you can do with IIDtool
I’ve looked at a bunch of D3s with “intent to buy” and at least here it is not common to clear codes after service so typically a bunch of them are from ages ago and MIGHT not matter anymore. Might be very different in UK.
Almost forgot - congratulations on your new investment, make sure you have a deep credit line available

You are welcome to plug in my iid bt unit
They are vin locked but I believe you can still use it in other motors to read the codes
Let me know if this is any use.

yes, it’ll let you read codes from any vehicle. I lent mine to a friend with D4 and he got codes off without any issues.

Gonna head back to our local garage the morn's and take pictures of the fault codes etc before going to the car garage we bought it from and see what they are saying about it.
Kajtzu, yeah our local garage said that some of the faults may be historic and as you said haven't been cleared. Just as the car had been serviced before we bought it and they didn't clear the service message on it.
Sea Raider, thanks for the offer and will keep you in mind if we have any problems with either of the garages.
Thanks guys

When I plugged the ID tool into mine it had around 72 faults dating about a couple of years.
Cleared and left with 6 faults. 2 connected to the steering wheel adjustment. Since its manual adjustment I'm not surprised it has a signal issue.

PJM-84,
Thanks for that reply it has made me feel a bit better about our 57 faults and hope they are all historic.
I wonder if I can convince SWMBO to allow mw to buy a IID tool now
I did learn something new from our garage today that has me wondering. I topped up my brake fluid reservoir as it was below min after the warning light had come on (thank god for the owner's manual ) and mentioned this to the garage as we had asked them to check the brakes etc and he said that the low brake fluid may be caused by the clutch slipping as both the brakes and clutch are run off the same fluid system which suprised me.
Once again guys thanks for your replies

Well thought i would give a little update on our Discovery woes.
Got it back from the dealer with a new clutch and all the fault codes cleared and everything sorted apart from the parking brake fault (amber light) as seemingly it need's to go to a specialist to get the software or module updated. Had it booked to go into our local garage on Mon coming just to check it over.
Parking sensors still not working properly even though an auto-electrician had a look at it and said he couldn't find anything wrong with them.
SWMBO went for a drive in it and at one point was going round a roundabout and the DSC amber light (triangle with exclamation mark and arrow circle round it) came on momentarily and a sound similar to crunching of gears could be heard. Took it for another drive myself and it did the same thing again same light and noise but this time afterwards a noise could be heard from the drivers side front wheel area.
Into our local garage we went and explained the fault so onto the diagnostics it went and came back with 20 odd faults (engine management, park brake to name but a few) and he couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from as he had a wee drive himself (sounded like something banging and was ready to fall off)
So back to the dealers this morning it went to try and get fixed again
Starting to think we should just ask for our money back and look elsewhere

If the DSC is activating as you say on a roundabout and you were at a 'normal' speed, there is a mismatch between the yaw rate sensor and steering angle sensor readings. Most probably the steering angle sensor needs calibrating , or there is severe wear on suspension bushes .Is the steering wheel pointing in the straight ahead position on a level straight road ? I have just had this problem on left hand bends and it was a rear upper arm suspension bush totally shot allowing the rear arm to steer the back wheel thus creating the mismatch..

As far as i can remember the steering wheel pointed straight ahead but I could be wrong.
Amazingly one of the faults that we originally reported to the dealer and they said that had been fixed was the steering angle sensor and that our garage had said that the sensor could be causing a lot of the problems.
Seemingly they are just going to put it to the local Land Rover specialist "Gibson's" to get checked over and fixed so fingers crossed

It's going to the right place, they're not even gonna send it back to the garage that did the clutch and fingers crossed wont cost us a penny to fix

Hey Pete,
Yeah we started with about 56 codes which we and they didn't know whether they were historical or not. So they cleared all the codes drove it and supposedly fixed everything that they found.
Week later we put it back onto our local garage Snapon tool and came back with 20 odd codes so we are at least half way there
Hopefully after being at specialist all will be fixed and very few codes come back up thereafter
