Car breakdown cover while towing a tintent, Are you covered |
|
Just thought ide give a heads up on renewing my breakdown cover.
As my car insurance is due,
I allways check a few sites to see if renewal quote is competitive,
Admiral multi car quote for renewal,
way more expensive than many others this time round,
So via online & phone, found better deals on insurance with breakdown cover,
I allways ask if the car breaks down with the tintent on tow, is the tintent covered with the car recovery "yes"
So all is well untill I get another quote with the same question,
"Yes but with some restrictions"
The limit being a max of 23ft,
So upon checking, all previous quotes with breakdown cover there was a max length of 23ft for the caravan.
Even my old insurance cover with breakdown last year said the tintent was covered for recovery in the event of the tow car breaking down, not the case,
im guessing In the small print somwhere it said i wasn't covered because the tintent was over 23ft,
The caravan insurance only covers me if the van is dammaged,
it is then recoverable,
2yrs of draging the tintent about not knowing the caravan could have been left on the hard shoulder,
Not now tho, AA to the rescue.. RRSport MY12hse but don't hold that against lill o me
Hybrid TV, cubby Fridge, Surround Camera's, Sun Roof.
Disco 3 MY05hse Sadly gone
All alone in my own little world,
But everybody knows me there, so I'm ok.

I use GEM Motoring Assist which covers caravans without a length restriction. Cover starts from £58.29 which is far cheaper than any other scheme that I have found. At this price you have to pay a local garage and then reclaim the cost from GEM but I have always found this worked very well. They have a help desk to find a local garage so you are not left struggling to find anyone and I have found the response time to be very good.

I've always checked the length restriction when I've done my cover. But you are right to flag it up - it is not always obvious and with a twin axle they are generally getting on for 8m. Mark.

I think the aa is a max limit of 7.2 m. So read the small print.
I use greenflag through the CC.

@sean
I was told the AA had no length limit, only a 3t weight limit on towed tintent or trailer
Not had my paperwork thru yet, so can't confirm either way,
& you're right if you go thru any tintent club & take there breakdown cover, no restrictions, but only available to club members only,
But so many only cover upto 23ft, RRSport MY12hse but don't hold that against lill o me

Sure the AA have a length limit or used to. I use greenflag mayday. When on holiday I just want to concentrate on enjoying myself so less worries means happier times.

I was with the AA, when I questioned them on it, they said as long as it is legally allowed to be towed, they would recover it in the case of the towing vehicle breaking down, that was just over a year ago.
The RAC used to be not so good, they brought in length restrictions a while ago which forced me to change.

Land rover recovery used AA to get me last year with tin tent, twin axle at 7.8mtrs. Nobody questioned the length. I'm to old to know everything......
D4 Gone over to the Dark Side (D5)
D3 gone ...... But now want one for knocking about! Is this a form of insanity?

I use AutoAid - £39.90 covers me and the wife for any vehicle whether owned by us or not. Recovery to anywhere in the UK with any caravan providing it has a normal hitch. Fantastic value.

Caravan Club Mayday for the UK, and Red Pennant for the continent, complete peace of mind.
Some of the other length restrictions relate to the legal maximum of 7m body length, so it's worth challenging the call centre numpties on this. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Never had a problem with the length, caravan that is, just have to be careful as to whether or not the caravan was being towed when the breakdown occurred. Last year my towing vehicle, an L200 developed what turned out to be a major problem, managed to stagger last few miles on to site but L200 knackered, (bottom pulley) End of the week AA still recovered both van and L200, brilliant job, first time I'd used them since joining in 1970.
