Can I use the car with epb disconnected? - see related topic |
|
Ok so it’s Boxing Day, pitch black, 0 degrees outside and snowing!! But I’m under the car out in the elements because today my hand brake seized on, on one side I think, and I couldn’t use the car.
This is my only car and I need it tomorrow. Lots of tools but no parts. I’m expecting to find something seized behind the disc which I hope to be able to release, so my question is, because I think there may be more going on, can I leave the fuse out for the epb and use the car without it until I have time to investigate more and properly sort it?
I started having issues a few weeks ago and am convinced that even though both my partner and I have stopped using the epb whilst Christmas and New Year were happening, it’s got progressively worse, almost as though it’s been applying itself even though we haven’t been. If I wind the shoes all the way in on both sides and disconnect it altogether surely it shouldn’t give me any issues until I can sort it properly? Just wanted to check.

From what I have been told, it is still operational when you put the vehicle in park.
Mine was on the way out and I Thought the same "Don't use the hand brake"
In the end I bit the bullet and had the hand brake repaired £500 bill
all the best

When mine gave trouble a few months ago I pulled a fuse under the bonnet and it kept it off for a few weeks until I got it sorted. Mine was screaming like mad but only need new shoes cleaning adjusting. Search here to see what fuse, it took out the cruise control as well. Mine is a manual so I just left it in gear.

Pull the big fuse under the bonnet.
You may not need any parts if the arm in the shoes is siezed

Well after winding in the epb shoes as far as they would go, I just put the road wheel back on and didn’t bother putting the fuse back in. Drives great! Better than it has for weeks.
Ok so no epb right now but as it only occasionally gets used anyway I’m not missing anything. Found the cable going to that wheel in a bad way, so problem could be partly if not fully due to that.
Thanks for the advice.

Can i play devils advocate...
You are suggesting driving your car on the public road with the “emergency brake” disconnected! Although i fully appreciate why you wish to stop the “Parking Brake” working... Removing the fuse ALSO means, the “Emergency Brake” will be disabled!
We all know how good the brake pipes are on JLR vehicles... Should yours fail, you will have NO way of applying the “Emergency Brake” sir...
Just worth a thought... 15.5MY XS in Corris Grey with Black & Almond leather

Erm, what’s the emergency brake of which you speak?

The electric park brake is just an electrically operated drum brake on the rear axle. As such, if you pull up the switch while the vehicle moves, you can use this as an emergency brake.
A friend of mine lost his D3 due to the excellent quality front to rear brake pipes failing both at the same time.
And another friend totalled two cars when the gearox parking pawl failed to hold th car on a slope.
If you wound back the shoes, take off th disc, clean, grease where necessary, put back together. Do both sides, adjust (see bodsy's brake bible) and you're good to go till you get fresh parts. get them soon. Where's the deal?

Yes I was wrong to have driven mine with the fuse pulled, no excuse.
And yes I have had to use the old fashioned handbrake to stop a Carina when the brakes failed, a slave cylinder burst it’s seals it had dual circuit brakes but I lost all brakes
So this brings me to the emergency brake feature on a D3/4.
Probably there are a lot of drivers that don’t know it exists or how to use it.
Using the emergency brake is all or nothing, use it and it’s full on brakes
I have in the past tested it from about 40 kmph and boy does it work for anyone who never used it, it stops you faster than you could imagine. Try it but make sure there is nothing behind you
As far as I know at higher speeds it uses the ABS to slow the car and then at slow speed uses the EPB to stop, so what would happen if you had brake failure at higher speed the ABS would have nothing to work with.

I've used it at lower speeds and it locks the rear wheels.
At higher speeds I thought it would progressively apply it.

As the car in question is an auto.
I don't understand why the fuse can't be left in.

Oh no pull the brake switch up it beeps two or three times and then throws out the anchors on all four corners. It’s a full on emergency stop with the brake lights on if above about 5 mph. Try it some time
