automatics do not leave the factory like this. And don't automatically apply the parking brake.
Settings can be changed with IID
pretty sure that mine was applying, or at least trying to apply itself, not by design, as it's never done that before, but there is obviously either a fault or an obstruction or something there. Also do you know what commonly causes the auto release to stop working on the auto?

I don't sorry.
I guess any sort of fault with it, would stop the auto release.
I would try and service the shoes and grease the pivot arm.
And see if you can see anything wrong in there.
It does sound a bit like you may end up opening the motor unit in the middle though. Don't know anything about that, but there is a guide by mikey

you'd think, although to begin with I could still manually apply and release even when the auto-release had stopped working.

Isn't that just called using the parking brake?
What I meant was pushing down the EPB button when stopping and removing the key stops the car from automatically applying the EPB for just that cycle. You have to hold it down each time you don’t want the car to auto apply. It’s a temporary override.

Perhaps this is something manual cars do? My automatic doesn’t apply the EPB when removing the key. I think one could configure the behavior in CCF.

No, you pull the lever/switch up to put the brake on, down to take it off like a manual park brake
Autos have a gearbox lock come on automatically when the engine is switched off which is why it is not always necessary to apply the parking brake. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
