Camping in Tunisia
Hi guys
We are about to set off again in a couple of weeks (after 3 months in Scandinavia and 8 weeks in Spain) and this time we are thinking about driving down through Italy and catching a ferry over to Tunisia. Has anyone camped in Tunisia? Any good sites to stay in? Information seems a little thin on the net compared to Morocco.

A few of the chaps on here have experience of Tunisia, namely DSL, SN, etc. I'm sure they will be along in a minute.

Done 3 camping trips and camped 4 nights each trip, with a night at a hotel either side. All just wild camping in the desert, usually in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic place to go to, well it was pre revolution, no idea what it's like now. We usually went from Marseille to Tunis, though once had to use Genoa as the French were on strike.

Good fun playing but expect to get stuck.

Deffo off the beaten track is not something you should do alone. Hotter the sand the softer it gets, one of the few places where bog standard road tyres so a lot better than AT or aggressive mud tyres.

Thanks for that, yep we do want to do something like that, it looks fab and there is no way I would like to go into the desert alone! Very good advice. For now we are wondering if anyone has actually used any campsites in Tunisia or been there recently.

I think the last trip to Tunisia loosely associated with this site was October 2010 which I was fortunate enough to be on

Some of the areas mentioned are where we traveledd to so not sure how the "feeling" is in the country.
When we all went we just wild camped,As DSL and SN has mentioned,there are some campsites around but we never used them.
Here are a couple of the tents
Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!

To answer my own question, you can't really camp in campsites in Tunisia. I found a list of about 12 potential sites, All except 2 are now non existent or in the'only travel if essential' areas. We found a very basic site and a really tiny site (couldn't get Camel in) in Tozeur but that is all. There seem to be quite a few mock Bedouin sites that are all set up with tents, especially down in the Sahara.
It took us over 5 hours to get through customs and we have had to stay in hotels anyway as we don't want to wild camp.
