Caliper carrier bolt issues - help! |
|
So trying to get to the wheel bearing and got stuck trying to remove the two big bolts that the caliper carrier uses. Got one off after lots of effort, the other I’ve almost stripped trying to remove. So what do I do now? I can cycle to the train station tomorrow and get to a stealer for new bolts, which means the car is totally unusable, but I’d like to carry on and replace the wheel bearing etc so what tip for removing that bolt?
Hoping someone has a suggestion that I can do at home with my tools. Sod’s law it’s the top one so absolutely no bloody room to do anything 🤬

if it's already mangled then Irwin bolt removers and a big bar might be the only option unless you can get a grinder in to it to take the head off? Pete

With a decent 12 point socket they should be almost impossible to mangle the heads.
If you've got one bolt out completely and the bolt really isn't budging, apply lots of heat (assuming the caliper is well out of the way) make sure it's slathered in penetrating oil (though beware fire risk with lots of heat and oil) and give the caliper carrier a good whack with a lump hammer at the free end, in the direction that would loosen the bolt if the bolt were seized to the carrier itself.
If you're changing the disc and hub you can get a wrecking bar in against the edge of the disc to try to budge the carrier. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
