IIRC...

forward facing beams, that are not work lamps, ie driving lamps must be killed when the main beam is dipped (ie wired into that circuit). If they are over 1.2 (or maybe 1.5?) metres and NOT within I think 12 inches of the front axle then they are always illegal for road use - so you can use them on a lorry but not a discovery.

So, as I have always interpreted the law, the high position driving lights must have their own switch and also should not be "activatable" at all when the main beam is not switched on.

My auto mechanic, who is also an MOT tester took the same view and, as we speak, is wiring these beauties accordingly...

EDIT TO ADD:

Green laning is "on the highway" and therefore the same laws apply. As to "off road" use - as you don't even need an mot or insurance, you don't need any lights at all and you can put your lights anywhere you like.

Not disputing any of that guys but I am right in saying you only use these bad boys when no oncoming vehicles present, yes? Obviously yes.

So who's going to know if they wired to full beam or on a switch. Very Happy

Also just for clarity here.

Lights have 3 stages. Dipped (position 1), Main (position 2), Full (pull stalk towards you). I'm referring to wiring to Full beam.

No. You are not allowed to use them at all on the highway as they are mounted further back than 12 inches above the axle. Ever. Whether a vehicle is oncoming or not is irrelevant to their use.

The purpose of wiring them into the main beam switch is so that they will definitely be off when the main beam is off. As much as anything, this is for your own protection.

I cannot fathom why you would want to go to the trouble of discussing the wiring through your car - potentially drilling holes, affecting legality, mot, insurance and anything else - and then consider doing something other than correctly.

I don't have that kind of money to throw at a truck.

Appreciate your opinion. I usually refrain from being drawn on matters of legality in forums for this exact reason there will always be far differing views that are difficult to debate effectively when using a keyboard.

All I wanted to know was if anyone had any advice on best way to route the cable and mount the switch.

Light button has 2 positions. First is what I'd call dipped beam or side lights? Second is what I'd call main beam.

Third position is gained by pushing/pulling indicator stalk and is what I would call full beam. In my case it is also the beam that my spots on nudge bar are wired into and I would only use that on an empty road with no oncoming traffic or when I wanted to flash someone for whatever reason.

Law and legalities totally aside please guys that last position is also where I'd suggested connecting the rack lights. It was just a proposal and I appreciate it may not be legal just for the record!

Why am I not getting this.

I've just asked my good lady and she has said the same. I asked this 'light switch has two positions and indicator stalk has the third. What do you call them?'

She also replied Dipped, Main, Full.

What do you lot call them then??

No wonder so many people drive around on side lights, if they think that that is dipped beam!
Anyway for what it's worth I have also run the wiring inside the RAI and have the switch on the overhead panel.

When it’s dark I drive on what I would call main beam!! Position 2 on lights switch for those of you that think I drive on side lights in the dark Rolling with laughter

When it’s just getting dark I use side lights. I have always called these dipped beam. Position 1 on light switch for those of you that think I drive on whatever when it is just getting dark Rolling with laughter

Jmack says side, dipped, main/full

So is it side, dipped......main or full??

Why can it not just be dipped, main, full as I said originally?
