Byway Access Question

Fancied going home via a byway today.

Turned off the main road and then saw the dead end sign.

Drove down a bit further then saw this sign:

Does anyone know what it means?

There is a signpost showing a byway and it appears on bywaymap.com as a green route.

It also shows on an OS Map as a byway open to all traffic

If they didn't show it as a dead end and someone drove their mx5 up there......

Have you checked with the county council definitive map? Many councils have these online now. If it's still a BOAT then by all means drive it, but good to check the conditions first. Might be scratchy, might have drainage issues that will lead to damage if driven etc.

Worth joining GLASS if you haven't already - the support they give on this sort of issue makes the joining fee seem trivial Thumbs Up
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

There are two classes of byway, a restricted one , not open to mechanically propelled vehicles and a Byway open to all traffic ( BOAT ) which is. As mentioned the best way to find out is to consult the Definitive map held by the local county council or Unitary Authority. The road sign looks home made and probably has no legal standing. Unfortunately OS maps may be out of date.

I have tried to check the County Council website for information. Unfortunately they have just had their website refreshed and it's truly terrible.

I'm fairly confident I am allowed to drive down there.

I was just a bit confused by the sign. I did think it looked home made but I had never seen one before and didn't know if it meant 'TRO' applied to that byway.

I will be joining GLASS, I just always remember to do it at the wrong time.

Thanks for your help

The farmer or business owner has probably put the dead end sign up to stop people who blindly follow their sat nav and then get stuck Thumbs Up

If they're too stupid to look at their stanavs all the time how will a road sign stop them?

When I saw the sign I embedded below I assumed it was a T, however I do see how it could be an additional dead end sign to stop people going do there in the wrong vehicle.

Guess I'll go investigate tomorrow! Very Happy

That is not an official sign. Check it out with the local council ROW officer, and if it is legal to drive, then drive it.

Many roads in Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire have Dead end signs on that have a legal Bye way at the other end, can be a good way of finding them.

The other sign looks and probably relates to something private

As others have said you need to check out more
