I recognise that M4 relates to a BMW twin turbo coupé. "VT" has me stumped, my first thought was Vosper Thornycroft, then Ventricular Tachycardia......
About Discos. I have had numerous & would suggest that FSH ++ is essential.
++ means changing the oil in the "sealed for life" autobox, obsessive oil & filter changes, in my case every 6k miles, new oil pump at some time/distance (debatable).

VT means voluntary termination (of a contract) in conjunction with a lease.
Anyway, welcome to OP.
Probably smart to get a vehicle with FSH but of course remember to verify that it really is that, too. Plenty of dealers claim such things. In theory buying a vehicle from a forum member might be better since the history is more known than from a faceless dealer somewhere. On the other hand buying from a private person has other risks than buying from a company in terms of consumer protection.
Lastly, don’t spend your last cash on the vehicle but save some for mods, repairs, a rainy day, etc.

If you don’t need 7 seats or the massive boot of the D4, a used FFRR might be less of a shock after the M4. Especially if you go for the Supercharged V8 petrol or the SDV8. Just fit 20” rims to make the rough track more tolerable and minimise the risk to the alloys.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

RR or Disco (regardless of age/model) could both cost you serious money at some point, a Freelander 2 is a pretty sensible motor.
Do you need 4wd? Or just the ground clearance? Lots of nice stuff out there with comfort, pace and ground clearance that won't kill your bank account like a D4 canI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Like LT, I’ve owned both D4’s and a FFRR, but I’m confused by you SiL’s comment about the Range Rover having better spares availability. It’s fine on both cars.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

There's 50 ways to leave your lover and 50 ways to solve this problem. One of them being to get a Discovery 4, which will accomplish a farm track with aplomb. Other options include anything from a Fiat Panda 4X4 to a full fat Range Rover, with dozens in between.
But if your daughter's track is an excuse to get the D4 you want, then crack on. But beware, excellent vehicles though they are, bills for putting things right and servicing are high and these come around regularly. Possibly not the way to go if you have just lost your job.
You can get any spares you want for Land Rovers of any description and age though easily, so not sure where that came from.

Spares availability for both vehicles is no problem and I can't imagine that one is more reliable or cheaper to run than the other.
My 2014 has been fine reliability wise, but maintenance is expensive.
Unless it's what you really, really want or need, and when finances are a constraint, I'd look at something smaller and less expensive to run.
If a muddy track is the issue, but your M4 can get up it, I'd be looking at an allroad estate or one of the smaller 4x4s.
A D4/RR is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut in this instance I feel.
