Butterfly valve removal.
The EGRs were already blanked on my D3 Commercial when I bought it in December. I have been experiencing poor power at low revs, so I checked this evening and the butterfly valve is still in place.
I have stripped everything apart to remove the valve but I cannot seem to extract the spindle. I have tried getting a screwdriver behind to prise it out but it seems to be at far too much of an angle. Another thread on here suggested gripping the end with plumbers pliers but I am using quite a bit of force and it is still not budging. Any other suggestions?

Plenty of wd40 or similar and let it soak.
I thought I was going to break my butterfly during removal, it then just comes out.
All I can offer as help, is it stick at it. It will come out.
Edit: although I can also confirm removing the butterfly made no difference to mine. I blanked the EGR’s as a quick Job ages ago and only recently removed the butterfly.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

Mine was a to remove, like you I was levering it with a screwdriver but I was afraid of damaging the intake body, in the end I removed the body and got it on the bench. It was still wouldn’t budge then it just went pop and out it came, the spindle is a loose fit back in without the flap.
Mine goes a lot better without the flap fitted.Steve

Thanks chaps. It's soaking in Duck Oil overnight, so will see what happens in the morning.
Is it fairly easy to remove the body?
Steve, does yours pull better at low revs with it removed?

Yes it comes off easily, it improved the down down pull (but they do weigh 2 1/2 ton) and mpg went up......a bit😁Steve

I had another go at this yesterday morning.
I removed the connector behind the Y piece and managed to get it up at a bit more of an angle. Despite the Duck Oil I still couldn't shift the spindle with grips, or a screwdriver. In the end I found an old screwdriver, heated it and bent it to 90 degrees in the vice. I could then get this under the bottom of the spindle where the cut-out is in the housing casing.
It moved slightly, then I had to pack it each time with progressively larger pieces of wood, then I used a very small pry bar at the top and eventually it came out. How nothing broke with the force involved, I don't know. What a PITA!
I haven't taken it for a drive yet but will do so tomorrow.
