UPDATE.....
The assessor was unable to detemine the exact cause of the fire.
The battle with the insurance company has started, with them offering 2/3 replacement value.
Love how they charge premiums on what I paid for it, them offer 2/3 of what I can buy a replacement for.
Got to pay for the million dollar exec bonuses somehow.
We are just lucky that we can live without a car for day to day stuff, so we are in no great hurry.
It a pity as we had planned a holiday to the UK next week.. I was looking forward to speaking English again and eating a good steak pie. .

Feel for you Andrew, its a smell you will never forget, I lost one years ago in an under ground carpark, hydraulic hose over the manifold. I hope the insurance company gets sensible, do you have an Ombudsman, it works wonders here in the UK?

You are definitely right about the smell, we are still trying to remove it from some items removed from the wreck.
My teenage daughter managed to recover her favourite shoes, and with a bit of TLC have come good - that is all she cared about .
Im hoping the insurance will listen to reason, although the German system is pretty rigid with rules. Im currently talking with some work colleagues to determine what recourse I have.
There might be a clause that holds you 1/3rd responsible for not ordering the fire to extinguish itself in a sufficiently authoritarian tone.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

You are probably right I should have spoken to the car with a more sufficiently stern German voice, whilst giving a disapproving glance
