Broken Cubby Box Lid Latch
Good evening,
Last weekend I bought my 2010 LR4 XS and have spent the week cleaning it up and sorting out bits and bobs like buying mats, loadspace cover and missing bits of trim. I'm loving the car, especially how easily accessible parts are when bits break.
All except one, it seems.
The silver latch on the cubby box lid is broken. The plastic prongs are broken off. It's a really trivial thing to get hung up on, but trying to sort a replacement is driving me mad!
I've taken the lid apart, and can access the inside of the lid insert, but the silver latch doesn't seem to come out, and there doesn't appear to be a corresponding part anyway to replace it with. I can't find a lid insert with the USB / IPOD connection in it.
I've been searching the forums for previous posts but couldn't see any. If anyone has managed to find a way of replacing the latch, without spending a fortune on a whole new lid, I'd very much appreciate some pointers.
Many thanks,
Chris

Hi
Unfortunately you have to buy the complete lid assembly as the catch doesn't seem to be available as a separate item, and they always break in the same place as the metal rod that gives strength inside the catch always shifts and allows it to break. If your leather is good, but just the catch is broken, you can strip the plastic underside that contains the mounting for the clip and spring and buy a cheap knackered one off eBay from an earlier car (needs to be post 2007 as they were a different colour before then) that is a bit more basic and then strip it and transfer the clip. The underside comes off by removing the lid and then removing all of the Torx screws - including the ones under the rubber plugs.
If you have the old broken parts you could try to re assemble the broken components fixing the rod inside at the same time with some epoxy, but it probably wont last and as it is only a PVD type coated plastic part, so tends to be weak even before breaking and re bonding.

I'm sure you'll regret saying that at some point in the future Kev

That sounds ominous!!
Thank you for the pointers darrind. I've taken the PVC covered top off and have the inner plastic tray that the Ipod and USB ports are attached to. The latch itself is still on. I tried to prise it off, but it wouldn't budge. It's the 2 protruding prongs that secure the lid to the cubby that have snapped off. Sadly I don't have the broken bits to even try to glue on.
I've finally got a few photos I can upload.
I've been looking to see if I can buy the inner assembly. Struggled to find a part number and when I did, the part is in Miami!!
Seriously considering filing down the broken bits and leaving it, but if I can sort it out I would like to have it right. Amazed that it was designed like that though!

that one is a surprise - normally they go where the shaft runs through that it pivots on!
Did have an old D4 one somewhere that has a clip on it still but cant for the life of me think where I put it!Must stop buying shiny toys....

In my case (D4 XXV with Windsor leather) I bought a used part (but ok) from a breaker and I change only the silver part (swapping it). Not so difficult.Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

I found one with a broken end in the garage if you want it - the two prongs and outer surface is good, it has just broken where the metal shaft runs through that it pivots onMust stop buying shiny toys....

Here’s a picture

As you can see the left side has done - its a clean break, so you could probably epoxy the pivot from yours onto it - if the metal centre shaft is bonded in place I dont think it would break again.Must stop buying shiny toys....

Sorry I didn't get back to you. Thank you for offering. Very kind.
Got it sorted now. One job crossed off the list 👍
