A broken crank

Hi All at Disco3

I know this is a well trodden path on this forum (and others) I have a small issue with my disco4 in that the crank has snapped after what I thought was a small oil leak.

Ive owned the car for 18 months and is relatively high mileage (150k) but really like how it drives and the space for family, dog etc etc.

I understand from reading here that it will need a new recon engine.

Can anyone suggest a reliable source in the Bristol area.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if to direct but first post.

Mark

Sorry to hear about your issue. As above, call Joe @ Oval Autos. See my review here

Joe is a great guy and if you have any issues afterwards, he will do his very best to resolve them for you.

Be careful when searching online about recon TDV6/SDV6 engines. There are a lot of rogues out there!

I'll leave Ken (or Oval Autos) to comment but "around £ 2500 for rebuild" sounds far too inexpensive to me, so don't get your hopes up.

The link Ken gave above doesn't work (for me) - but this one does:-

Good luck.

Tht is the basic price I got with additions for turbo rebuild and injectors. If the block needs yo be repaced theris also an addition.

They did an excellent job. As I was in Sweden I sent my overheated motor to them and got it done and sent back. They prefer to replace in the car for testing, but made an exception.

I can really recommend them.

Thanks NJSS

I actually had the same problem with the link so very helpful, good to read and also see Kens images, its given me a couple of sleepless nights. Next problem is when it came off the lorry I parked it next to a wall and the battery is now flat, can you guess what side...

Just need a brick I guess Smile

Beat me to it Dean - I was just about to say that.

If not I seem to recall that if you jack the front end you may be able to get a jump lead to the starter motor & earth - there's a thread here somewhere on that IIRC.

Thanks Both this is so helpful.

In truth i'm not sure ref the electrics for towing as never have, I'll take a look and see what under the cover when the rain stops, I may be able to get a small child (mine) to squeeze down the side with the key as I guess it will open all the doors? You may no different.

It's been sat for around six months so expect a few issues and or smells.

Joe will be able to provide you with accurate and up to date pricing.

For the sake of a rough indication only, based on old pricing for the 3.0 TDV6...

Base price £3k
If your crank is not re-useable, add £1000
If your block is not re-useable, add £1000

Other surcharges:
Heads £175 each
Pistons £75 each
Conrods £55 each
Camshafts £125 each
Turbo (recon) £450 each
Injector £250 each

All plus VAT

Like I alluded to above, please treat these prices with a pinch of salt until you are able to speak to Joe directly.

Given you have a snapped crank, the likelihood is that your block is also warped so you are likely looking at a minimum of £5k + VAT.

The way it works is...
1. You pay £1500 and get to the car to them.
2. They remove the body from chassis, remove the engine, fully strip it down and send the injectors away for testing.
3. They analyse the extent of the damage and provide an accurate quote to you.
4. You then make the decision if you want to proceed or not. If you don't, they reassemble everything, you get the car collected and go on your merry way.
5. If you go ahead, they fit one of their rebuilt engines, road test it in the vehicle for between 100 - 200 miles and put a 12 month warranty on it.

It's important to mention that all cranks, conrods, pistons, pulleys and flexplates/flywheels are sent away to be balanced as complete assemblies. They do this to reduce the risk of bottom end imbalances as much as possible. This is not even performed by Ford when they manufacture the engines from new.

Likewise, when injectors are sent away, they are tested for operating pressure, leakage and also spray pattern. Any of which could contribute to an imbalance which could cause future failure and may have contributed to the previous failure. If any of these parameters are out of spec, the injectors will need to be replaced and you will be informed of this in step 3 above.

They also install all new gaskets, oil seals, piston rings, lifters, oil pump, water pump, belts (front and rear), big end and main bearings, camshaft chains, guides and tensions into all of their rebuilds.

Enhancements like the above, coupled with other things like wire-wrapping the oil extraction pipe onto the bottom of the sump, road testing the cars for over 100 miles afterwards whilst continuously measuring the oil pressure in two places on the engine, the procedure they follow on first startup etc. all contribute towards risk reduction. This is how they are able to put a 12 month warranty on the engines.

Joe always refers to the engines they build as "our engines" which I find comforting due to the effort they put into building and testing them.

Given all of the above, I don't want to create the impression that Oval's engines are bulletproof afterwards...that certainly is not the case and Joe will be the first to admit this. Have cranks snapped in their rebuilt engines afterwards?....Yes, they have. See here: https://www.disco4.com/forum/unusual-snapped-crank-179147.html

The T/SDV6 cranks break, the bearings turn in the journals etc. We all know this. We also all know that the chances of this happening is low when considered in context of the thousands of T/SDV6s on the road. What he does is try to reduce the risk as much as possible for the owner and for him, given he is liable for the 12 month warranty.

And the parting words from Joe are always "I hope to never see you again" Laughing
