Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine

Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.

Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud ‘rumbling/knocking’ sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.

Thanks for all that. Even though my crank hasn't gone, it's annoying to notice that the quotation
"Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine

was from 2014, and they still contest everything.

I've sent them a subject access request for a copy of all information relating to me, my reg, and my vin number.

It has normally been taking 5-7 days for them to reply to anything I ask. Took them 20 mins, when I sent in the subject access request.

See what comes back from that.

Been a while since I updated this.

Here goes.

Subject access request supplied me with a copy of all emails sent by me and them. Copy of an internal reporting system highlighting contact details etc. and nothing else.

Nothing relating to the time my vehicle was at Guy Salmon, or and communications/reports/internal logging of the works/diagnosis. I have asked for this to be sent to me.

GS quoted
£1200-£2400 to diagnose problem.
£14000+VAT to replace engine.
If I decided not to replace engine, then:
£1200-£2400 to reinstate engine and car as was.

No offers of any kind for assistance form JLR

Car is at Oval Autos.

They determined that:
Crankshaft damaged
Block damaged
Both turbos need reconditioning.
Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

After a lot of soul searching, I have decided to repair it. Discussed with SWMBO, and we decided that it ticks too many boxes for us to change to something else. I did look around to see what was about, but couldn't stretch the budget to accommodate. I would still be looking at a pre 12 TDv6 that could have the same problem in 6 months time. With respect to the D3 owners, having owned the D4 I didn't want to go to a D3.

JLR are still talking to me (at the moment). I've gone form a customer service rep, to a team leader, and now with a manager. They have all been courteous at all times, and as helpful as they can be, in a corporate way.

A couple of times they have say, 'and this is our final answer on the subject', just to contradict themselves, and have to continue discussing it.

They do like to contradict themselves.

When I brought up the SSM71816 recently, they stated that it was for the retail network to know in relation to a range of VIN/Chassis numbers. I have asked for these details, or specifically, does mine fall into the range.

I have also asked if they are aware of what is the diagnosis procedure to be used with the recall in Korea. And is this procedure being used on the vehicles in the UK VIN range, if they happen to visit a retailer.

See what happens. Don't expect a reply until next week, as the manager is now away from the office until then.

I even offered to send the crankshaft to them for testing... Razz

It's a difficult decision Richard, but I'm sure you will be happy when you get the vehicle back. As you know, I was in the same boat and concerning purchasing another used vehicle versus getting mine fixed, it was 'better the devil you know'.

It's bad luck that your crank and block are not reusable as they are the big ticket items. It's also bad luck about the turbos but if you are keeping my the car for a few years yet, it's best they are done now as opposed to 6-12 months down the line.

Thanks Kev,

Joe has been very patient with me, trying to decide what to do.

Just want it back now.

Sharing the 1.6l Mokka has been bearable...just....

Apart form going up to London on 2 consecutive weekends. First was just me and SWMBO for the weekend. Second time was with SWMBO and the 3 girls, for them to see Take That in the O2. We left it too late to try and get a travel lodge or something close by. Drove up and back in the same day. That was NOT a comfortable drive....

I realise this may not be helpful, but I too suffered an engine failure at the beginning of April. My car is a 65 plate SE Tech adblue car with 27,000 miles on the clock. I brought it as a Land Rover Assured vehicle at the end of January. It cut out on the motorway north of Southampton on a Friday evening, this was, on reflection preceded by a low vibration rumble, and then just died very unspectacularly. Managed to pull onto the hard shoulder, engine still was showing a full quota of oil, and no oil residue under the car. Long story short, was uplifted home by the AA then after a visit by Land Rover Assistance was further uplifted to Stratstone Aylesbury. They diagnosed an Internal Engine Component Failure, ie engine seized. It was then referred to a Warranty Company who authorised the repair and then had to wait for Land Rover to agree the funding.
Stratstone then replaced the engine with no cost to myself. I consider myself very lucky. It took 5 weeks from breaking down to driving it home.

The part I like the most from one of the replies is this:
"Should we felt a recall is necessary we would have implemented this."
Yeah they're not recalling our cars because it is about every single one of them so it would cost them too much especially in their current financial situation.

I still, from the beginning, have all of my fingers crossed for you Thumbs Up

Reply came quicker than expected.

Couple of excerpts below:

"Firstly I must apologise for my comments in the previous email reference the VIN/Chassis ranges for the SSM regarding the SDv6 engines. Looking back at the SSM, it applied to all vehicles which had an SDv6 engine built into them at point of manufacture.

Once the vehicle is on site with one of our retailers, we will be happy to liaise with them and then review your request for financial support. Whilst I can empathise with your comments, this is the process in which we need to follow in order to be able to contribute towards repairs, Land Rover cannot progress the matter any further without the vehicle being inspected by one of our retailers as we cannot base any financial contribution on the part alone, so again I do apologise that we cannot meet your expectations to review the part on its own.

As previously advised by XXXXXX, the recall which has been issued in Korea, affects vehicles which are built for the Korean market and not the UK market. We cannot comment on the processes or actions which are taken outside of the UK.

I am sorry that we cannot answer your enquiry as fully as you had hoped, again we will be more than happy to assist once the vehicle is on site with one of our registered Land Rover retailers.

Once the vehicle is booked into one of our retailers please let XXXXXX or I know and we will be happy to liase with the retailer and yourself upon the findings of the diagnosis."

Other waffle also as part of the email, but as I pointed out to them, their retail network has already had my car...

One of my issues with the emails has been the first bit. Almost every email they send, starts with an apology for getting it wrong in the email before. I do fel slightly sorry for customer services. It almost feels like the bosses have said " You are CS, get rid of all the complainers. We only want to hear from our praisers"

When I offered to send the Crankshaft to Solihull for testing, they replyied that they were unable to do that there. So I've offered to send it to whichever address their testing facility is at for ensuring parts meet the expectations of JLR.
