brake pads after 16k? in dealer at mom |
|
Had new pads front and rear at 32k, and new pads and discs on front at 64k and pads on rear. Now at dealers with 80k and dealer says front pads are 80% worn.
Three choices
My driving style changed
or something binding
or dealer wrong.
Any advice? Thanks. d4 HSE

Which dealer ?
Always ask for removed parts, i.e. pads & disks, to be left in the car.
A certain dealer reported at the first three annual services that my pads & disks needed replacement - they weren't done until the 4th.
Their rationale is that they don't know how many miles you are going to drive before the next service!
My advice would be to inspect the brakes yourself regularly, and maybe measure pad thickness.
Go to a good Indy too.

suspect they are probably nearer 50% but as NJSS says if they is the smallest of chances of them not making the next service dealer will go for the sale
Plus would you change them if they said 50% Cheers Ian

My advice would be to say no and take a look yourself, as others have said it's not uncommon for replacements to be suggested when they are nowhere near needed. It'll cost you no more to have them done later when required Mark

It would be instructive to know what the dealer charges for pads & disks, and compare those charges with similar products from Advanced Factors, forum sponsors, who are after all in Southampton.
Their prices here:-

Well, maindealerdiscount.com claims that the full price for this job (parts and labour) is £230.00
With the maindealerdiscount.com discount applied, it becomes £170.20 (but I would have to drive to Doncaster to have the work done, rapidly eating into the £60 saving I would be making)
A front axle set of pads and shims from Steve is less than £50 and I could do it from the comfort of my own driveway

Woolmeister a.k.a. Steve is not the Steve to whom he, Woolmeister, refers!
It is Steve from Advanced Factors.
Just for clarity...
stick please do tell us what Hunters charged you for parts & labour.

Just got back from Hunters....
....they have not replaced the pads - apparently the technician had made an error inputting the numbers into his pda and had put an 8 instead of a 4!
Thank you all for comments. I think I better learn how to check my own pads....! d4 HSE

My 2010 D4 had Dealer service 3 in June at 32500 miles.(Last service within warranty).
About 10k of these miles was towing Twin axle Caravan.
Dealer "advisory": Rear pads at 4mm Front pads at 6mm. Probably good for 3k-4k miles but if wanted to change pads before warning light would save £16 as warning replacement cable would not be required.
Yesterday (34,834 miles) having looked at pads when changing to winter wheels - it looked like about 3mm. before disc rim might contact. Called dealer (Harwoods) for quote and was told £270 "all in"which would include sensor - rear wheels only!
My mate in his own one horse garage sourced Delphi "OEspec" for my aluminium caliper type brakes (see TLO post on D4 2010 model year alloy or cast model) fitted them in 1 hour for £80 "all in".
You pays your money and makes your choice!
My local indy. specialist quoted £170 "all in" which when mentioned to Dealer got reply "but they wont be LR parts". As mentioned elsewhere LR don't make pads but OE on mine were Ferodo made. LRD4 HSE Ipanema Sand/Arabica trim

You are right, I was aware of the dashboard warning light system which apparently has a sensor in the pad which connects through the previously mentioned cable. I have also been told by the dealer and others that if the sensor "lands" on the disc i.e. pad wear enough to allow contact, then it is best to replace it, hence dealer quote of "additional £16 if I wait for the light to show".
In any case, as I am going to be away for a week soon, I would rather replace the pads at 3mm. at a place of my choice rather than wait for the ultimate and be over a barrel with the nearest dealer who may or may not have availability when I want it.
I don't know how far you can go after the warning light before you start putting more wear on the disc either and clearly reducing it's life more than you want to. No doubt someone on here can tell us LRD4 HSE Ipanema Sand/Arabica trim
