Brake Pad Fitting Question
Hi All,
I'm planning to fit some new front brake pads tomorrow.
The new pads have arrived nice and promptly from TLO (thanks Nick) and while checking them before fitting I've noticed that there are two different types of shims (or retaining clips - whatever you call them).
One type is silver both sides, the other is silver on one side and black on the other. They have very slightly different designs.
I presume that one type is for the top and one for the bottom (unless they are left and right which seems unlikely) but there is no indication of which is which.
Does anyone which goes where?

Is there a difference between calipers on D4s,mi seem to remember a post by nick about that a while back, could this be because of that?Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Yes I recall there is a difference between D4 rear brakes and Nick posted this:

Guys
had a bulletin pop up today which i think the info should be passed on to help later down the line
it has been identified that between chassis numbers
AA513326 - AA547440 Discovery 4
There were 2 different types of brake calipers fitted to the REAR of the D4
either aluminium or cast iron (They were only fitted in pairs so you should not have mixed axles sets)
Now that on it's own is no real issue but the pads are slightly different in design meaning you need to be aware if you buy pads from a dealer as to which calipers you have and which pads to use
Cast Iron caliper uses pads
LR021316 Marked (FER4212FF)
Aluminium uses pads
LR015519 Marked (FER4258FF)
After Chassis number AA547440 they were ALL fitted with cast iron calipers
Now moving forward in vehicle ownership, and if at some point calipers need to be replaced again they recommened that THEY ARE NOT MIXED, so be warned, maybe some dealers may not pick this up so store this info in you noggin for later and question them as to whether they are aware of this.
I'm trying to up a pdf file of pictures of the 2 calipers and pads so i'll edit this post with the link in a while

These are for the front brakes, not rear.

any ideas?
I am assuming that I'll find similar ones when I take the old pads off and will just replace them like for like. But I'd rather know where they are supposed to go rather than simply assuming that whoever put the last ones on got it right.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

Well, the brake pads have been fitted and the shims used.
The ones that came off were all the brassy/silver both sides type.
The new black one side, silver one side ones seemed to fit in any location, no different to the brassy/silver ones. I just took a guess and put the black silver ones at the top of each side.
It seems to work.
If I die in a horrible brake failure car crash tomorrow, I'll let you know so you don't make the same mistake. MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
