Hello people -
I have just fitted some fabulous RED STUFF pads all round in my Disco-4, but the warning is still on in the cluster.
Do I need to swap out the cable/sensor thing on the pads ?
I did a fault code erase last night to try & lose the brake-pad warning & some how managed to get the vehicle to forget its Smart-Key, but fortunately I managed to fix this... but the pad warning still shows...
UPDATE - just discovered that I needed to replace the sensor, & got one ordered.

So... some people may be asking...
What are RED STUFF brake pads...
Here goes...
A Discovery or Range Rover is an immensly heavy vehicle...
And it takes some stopping.
The need to stop quickly i am finding, is NOT for the Discovery's protection, but rather to ensure that the malingering Butt-Plugs that pull out in front of it don't die a wasted squishy soggy death under its wheels...
The other issue is BRAKE-FADE.
If you have not encountered this, then pray you do not, especially with such a huge vehicle..
Brake fade is when the brake pads overheat, glaze & also when the brake fluid can boil or cook in the cylinders & also cause spongy brakes.... when you need them the most.
Brake Fade will usually only ever happen on a LONG drawn out braking sequence... ie on a long steep slope, where you get 3/4 the way down & realise you need to use two feet on the pedal to stop the vehicle, or a rapid slow down from ssy over 100mph.
Brake fade happens for a multitude of reasons.. some but not all below...
* The pad material on budget and OEM pads is bulked up with steel/iron particles, which can melt under heavy braking & partially lubricate the disk.
* the heat from having or prolonged breaking can EASILY heat the pads & disks to +400°c which causes a spongy effect, glazing of the pads, warped & cracked disks & total failure of braking, and even the pad to break away from its adhesive backing that holds it onto the backing plate.
* heavy / prolonged braking can easily cause the disks to glow bright orange with heat build up..
So, with all this in mind... EBC came up with some superior brake pads... these have zero steel bulking materials & amazing ingredients to allow them to do what they do best.
These ingredients are EXPENSIVE hence bog standard OEM pads are bulked up with steel particles.
EBC called them..
Green Stuff... for "spirited" road driving.
Red Stuff ... for semi fast road/competition driving.
Orange Stuff... for Track & Race...
And possibly other Stuff's too..
These Green/Red pads cost typically about £45 each hub..
ie £45 per corner.
The Green & Red Stuff pads have the advantage that they both offer superior braking when cold, and they also get more sticky & efficient the hotter they get..
The Red Stuff Pads will become so effective when hot that you will find yourself BACKING OFF the brake pedal when slowing down due to the pads getting more & more efficient as they get hotter...
Which also means NO BRAKE FADE... EVER..
The Orange Stuff pads are even better when hot, but they need to be really hot to work properly.
Due to the huge weight of the Discovery 3 & 4, I would ALWAYS fit Red or Green Stuff pads at the 1st chance i got.
I hear you say.... "Yeah-Right", my budget pads are fine...
Well, should you decide to try the Red or Green stuff EBC pads... ....you will NEVER use anything less again..
Note... you must fit these pads (matching type) to all 4 hubs.
