| Brake Overhaul and Replacement |

My D4 is in for service and just had a call back from the Dealer to tell me that the pads fronts and rear are 70-80% worn and the hand brake shoes will also probably need replacing. Total cost £750.00. Sounds a bit rich to me and on top of the £550 for the second year service, that'll be my pension up the Swanee for a couple of months.
Any thoughts on pricing? Should I get Bodsy's Brake bible out and interpret it for the D4?

Hand brake shoes on a 2012?  not likely to need those.
Sounds like a little guess work, even rear pads at 70% worn ? I would like to see a measurement of material left.

Sounds like a lot of money to me, parts should be nowhere near that, Even if the pads are signiicantly worn I would not be expecting to change disks on that age of car.
I don't know about the D4, vut with a trolley jack and a couple of spanners I can change all my pads inside 90 minutes, assuming nothing else needs attention
Handbrake shoes should not really wear unles they have been incorecly fitted,

If I wasn't going to do the work myself I would be ooking for another garage to do it.

All the comments most helpful - thanks. 
Found an offshoot of James Tennant (JT is downsizing and reducing work load) called James Richards near Okehampton. He worked for James Tennant for 14 years and has done a few brake systems of D3/D4. He estimated £175 for (genuine LR) parts and labour if I supply the front and rear brake pads (which I already have in my "might come in handy box" in the garage! ).
I'll report back on his work when completed for future reference.

If you can use a spanner and read a handbook (bodsys brake bible) you'll have no problem doing them yourself....
They're trying it on... How many miles has your car done If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

28k - the fellow that I'm taking it to next week will do a check and report on the condition of all the brake discs, pads and shoes and show me evidence.

If (and its a big if) the pads were 70% to 80% worn would the brake warning light not be on?
I got caught by a main dealer once - he told the rear pads were down to 2mm. On the reading the handbook it says the warning light comes on about 5mm and my light was not on!

I've also been told pads are 70-80% worn  ,I said "I can't afford it right now" and I almost got another years motoring out of Www.devonchilliman.co.uk

I have some sympathy with a garage mentioning wear on pads on the basis that they may not last until the next service and also being aware that most people don't do a visual check of both pads on all four wheels. Add the fact that the wear indicator is only on one pad on two of the wheels and you can see why someone might say to the garage when the pad hits the disc - why did you not pick that up at the service?
Oh, and of course they want the dosh  2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
