Brake judder issue.......help needed

Good morning

I am hoping that one of you technical / mechanical wizards can offer help and guidance.

About 16 months ago I bought my 2012 model Discovery 4 HSE

Shortly after buying it from MM4x4 it developed brake judder

I took it back and the concluded warped front discs. As it wasn’t covered in their warranty we arrived at a mutually agreeable arrangement and they fitted new discs and new pads. PROBLEM SOLVED

However a couple of weeks ago the judder reappeared and is getting worse.

I thought that this was strange and have never had this issue with any LR I have owned before.

I then started looking through the service history and discovered this has been an issue almost since the vehicle was new. Several receipts show disc and pad replacements have been happening at fairly regular intervals (about every 12 -18 months!

Surely this is not right??

Anyone got any ideas on how long discs should last on the D4, could it be another issue such as callipers for example

In fact as there is no warranty on the work done as it is now over 12 months so the next fix I need to be a permanent one as it is not a cheap job

I do approx 12000 miles a year the majority of which is motorway (if that helps)

Any advice guidance hep etc would be really appreciated

Thanks again

Motorway driving actually doesn't help as any run out on the disc or bearing can generate disc thickness variation (DTV), which in turn shows up as judder. DTV is caused by the disc just kissing the pad in one place as the wheels revolve. Driving in urban environments with frequent applications of the brakes mitigates this as it spreads the wear out. Long distances with little or no brake application exacerbates it. Once its started it only tends to get worse. I remember this explanation when I worked for Rover Group ,it was an issue which was raised when the engineers wanted the bearing tolerances tightened up to help prevent it on a new model.

Scrupulous attention to detail and cleanliness when fitting new parts with close attention to run out. Of course any variation of the hardness of material the disk is made of can also course it, and also poor design or heat treatment of the disc such that it distorts when heated in use .

Brake judder is not uncommon on D3's, especially autos.

Is it this?

If so replace the discs and pads with high quality ones e.g. Genuine LR. I had this issue abnd put Brembo's on and it fixed it and hasn't come back.

Out of curiosity do your Brembo pads cause a lot of brake dust? I changed mine about a month ago and have the rims constantly in black soot Shocked

My D4 has never had a set of pads replaced on the front due to wear! The juddering discs have always needed changing before the pads wore out. This is from new.

The dealers were rubbish. They just replaced bits at first and never investigated. Eventually they swapped the callipers but that didn’t solve it.

Eventually I did replace the brakes myself with Britpart discs. Still going ok 2 years on. Although they do squeal a bit when hot.

No, not noticed any dust issue. I have black wheels so not easy to spot have had pads and discs for a while and no issues.

I’ve had brake issues for several years now and never managed to resolve it.
Car is MY12, all was absolutely fine until I had 4 new Pirelli Scorpions fitted at my local KwiKfit. Within 24hrs I had a wobble under light breaking. Got wheels balanced again... seemed ok for a few days.... then it returned... so went to 3rd place to have balanced. Again, all ok for a few days but started Juddering / wobbling.

Concluded it must be discs.... gone through 2 lots of Brembo and also set of bendix since...
Every time I change, they’re fine for a few 000 miles then gradually get worse.

I’ve tried everything.... bedding in, never sit with foot on pedal after exiting motorway etc... it’s all spotlessly clean.... wheels not buckled. Pretty much given up. Will wait for the car to shake apart then sell it for parts 🤣
