how much strength is derived from the chassis and how much from the body would you say? Been looking at a discovery 3 and thinking about turning one into a pickup. remove the body and only replace the front half? can you see any reasons this wouldnt work?
cheers

Haha this will look bizarre reading this thread now seen as my last post is just above.
I’ve just finished rebuilding after my SECOND body off this year.
Worth noting...
Because I had to move the chassis while the body was up on start up the hdc had a hissy fit, special programs off etc. Parking brake fault, and on mine which has headlight cornering adaptive thingy that warning light flashing. The suspension switch won’t work etc. This will be due to needing to recalibrate the steering angle sensor.
Also worth making sure all the wheel speed sensors are plugged in.... Jarrod

Thank you so much for this useful post.
Just a hint.. don't forget the auto box plugs.
Here you see how we did it in rural Costa Rica

The problem is the missing documentation, not the LR

It's pretty much the same apart from the shifter cable and the harness route differences between >MY06 and MY07> If you haven't done it before you just need to be thorough when it comes to checking for anything still connected that shouldn't be. For example the air connection to the EAS exh silencer is one that is easily missed!
If you get stuck or aren't sure of something just ask. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Haynes describe the Body Off process as beyond the scope of the target for the Discovery 3 manual.
However they do give the procedure for reference. I thought it might be a useful read to see how they describe the process, and if they have missed major steps. Of course single sentence statements cannot possibly define the actual work involved for each step.
1 Have the air conditioning refrigerant circuit evacuated by a suitably-equipped specialist.
2 Remove the front and rear propeller shafts.
3 Remove the bonnet.
4 Remove the battery and battery tray.
5 Remove the coolant expansion tank.
6 Remove the air cleaner.
7 Remove the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
8 Detach the lower shaft from the steering column
9 Disconnect the engine and transmission wiring harnesses in the engine compartment.
10 Disconnect the servo vacuum hose.
11 Disconnect the refrigerant pipes and heater hoses.
12 Remove the radiator.
13 Remove the fuel filler flap and detach the filler neck from the body.
14 Remove the front wheel arch liners.
15 Remove the front and rear bumpers.
16 Disconnect the wiring from the following: low pressure AC switch, cooling fan, washer reservoir/pump, ambient air temperature sensor, ABS wheel speed sensors, earth strap (RH and LH front), body harness (RH front, LH front and LH rear), brake pad wear sensors
17 Disconnect the brake pipes/hoses at each corner.
18 Unclip the air suspension pipes at each wheel arch.
19 Disconnect the air suspension compressor intake pipe.
20 Disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever/body.
21 Remove the transmission undershield and heat shield.
22 Disconnect the selector lever cable or gearchange rod from the transmission.
23 Undo the mounting bolts, and lift the body from the chassis (see illustration) . Recover the spacing washers.
This might even be useful as a simple tick list for the steps.A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Propshafts don't have to come off
Bonnet doesn't have to come off
The TCM is inside the gearbox
The radiator doesn't have to come outMy D3 Build Thread

I don't understand the propshafts either, even if taking the body off for other work that required it why wouldn't you leave it until the body was off as access is going to be easier.
The bonnet opens wider than most cars so access to everything can be done with it in situ, I think they are getting confused with the module under the battery tray as I see no reference to it.
I am curious about the two post lift that the guy on LR Time (YouTube) has that is actually outdoors, probably not ideal if you live somewhere perpetually raining (Manchester?) but where I am we have around a 1/2 of the rain of the national average and 1/3 of Manchester A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. From what i learned the last 35 years spannering... NEVER trust a HAYNES/CLYMER manual
they can be nice for pictures though.... but for me that can be the ONLY reason to look inside one (i myself do not have a single one anymore)Best regards

Maybe a dumb question but will the Nearside and Offside references hold true regardless of Right hand or left hand drive or should the LHD folks plan on the inverse?
I'll know in a few days I suppose either way just curious.
