Hi All,
We have been noticing a bit of blue smoke on start up with our 2010 Discovery 4. I have searched and read various threads including the Land Rover bulletin which mentions amongst other things the turbo drain.
So anyway it has been to our local Indy today and they have noted the smoke but say that the car has no faults or problems and that it is just temperature dependent. So my question is, can having blue smoke on start up ever be considered normal or that a car has no fault?
Any thoughts much appreciated,
Andy

Mine has always kicked out some smoke on the first start up of the day. It's had the turbo drain mod which stopped it smoking when you needed to accelerate quickly from a standstill- before that was done, I pitied the poor so and so who was behind us, as they'd disappear in a cloud of smoke. The mod cured that.
The amount of smoke on first start up does seem to be a bit temperature dependent, as it's marginally worse the colder it is. It is only the first start up that causes it, and subsequently there is no smoke.
I've had the car four years now, and it's never changed. Never any faults recorded and no oil used etc., etc. It probably wouldn't show if it had a DPF, which it doesn't.

I assume you are referring to LTB00487v3 - 3.0 TDV6 Excessive Exhaust Smoke
If it's not had the modification carried out then as others have found there is a good chance if you get it done it will stop your smoking.
You may be able to do the mod yourself -
From another post -

I was quoted 400 plus vat from the dealer to do this work.
The only parts mentioned in the TB is LR013611 that costs 40 pound.
The TB list all VIns affected and its amazes me cars into 2013 are affected.
2010-2013 VIN Range AA510178-DA676456
Would seem latest TB only adds vin range. So why did they keep fitting the kinked pipe until into 2013 I wonder
Best Regards Ian
If you send hids4u a PM he may be able to give you more detail?

Thanks chaps, so in essence, worth getting the drain mod done but otherwise nothing to be overly concerned about. I've downloaded the instructions from Aulro.com but think I may get somebody with a bit more knowledge/experience do the job.

Well the mod certainly cured the smoke on mine when making a "brisk" getaway, so I would say yes to that. And it seems that the smoke at first start up is a quirk of some.

Thanks Nigel, do you mind me asking how much you paid for the mod, I'm not in your area but just to give me an idea.
Thanks,
Andy

I didn't as the car was still under LR warranty at the time, so FOC.
