Also, while on the subject - would it be worth having the engine re-mapped at the same time (are there cost advantages) - have seen several posts linking together (my car is an 05 so doesn't NEED to be done).
Doesn't take too long. Probably an hour's labour plus the blanking plates (which vary from single figures up to £50 or so, accoring to quality and whether 2 or 4 are used).
Have you considered fitting them yourself? Perhaps a nearby forum member would be willing to help?
A remap is always worthwhile, but since there is no software patch needed for your vehicle, there's no advantage to be had by doing it at the same time in this case. I've spent a fair few squids on EGRs over the years not really knowing what they do or why they fail. Except that once they've been replaced the car runs better and doesn't smoke.
So what are they and why do they fail?
If they can be blanked off without detriment to the car or the environment, why does Landrover fit them in the first place?

So EGR valves reduce emissions - thats a good thing isn't it. I'm not a sandal-wearing vegetarian (well, not since about 1977) but if recirculation of part-burned gases reduces particulate and other nasties which are proven to be related to asthma and other health problems, then should we be tampering?

Well, you can pay £600 to replace the valves, while everyone else blanks them off. In the grand scheme of things, one TDV6 without them blanked isn't going to cause the world to implode
In fact, I expect the amount of harmful gasses out the back of a cars is minuscule when compared to the levels of pollution created by the likes of China

Plus all those gritty particulates being sucked back into the engine doesn't help with good wear characteristics though most build up in the indication system making the engine use more fuel and pushing out even more pollution - but it will still pass static testing.

I did a bit of research on this while on a long and boring train journey yesterday and I'm now inclined to agree with you. We are 'saving the planet' more by keeping our older vehicles going, rather than buying new. The purpose of the EGR is to reduce NOx, but the downside is that this can increase particulates and reduce the efficiency of the engine.
As a regular cyclist in London traffic, I think its diesel particulates which are the worst problem.
So, i'll look into EGR blanking once the new gearbox is in. I think my D3 is an 07 model year though.
Yes, they can't even be said to "reduce emissions" since they increse the Carbon Dioxide output.

Get a remap and map them out. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Thanks all.
How do I contact Flack? I see from other posts that he's based in Preston but will he come to me or do I go to him?

EGR REmap
Hi. Does anyone do EGR remapping up here in Northumberland? Have just had the egr blank done but Engine Fault still showing and a code P0405, so think it may need mapping?
Thanks

Bladedancer - Did you manage to find anyone in Northumberland? I'm nearby and also looking to have the EGRs blanked and as my Disco is a 2009 I will likely need a patch/map.
