Black Rat or Beaver hand winch |

Wondering if anyone has experience with any hand winch options? Looking to keep vehicle stock and weight down, but still want recovery options.
thanks,
carl

Carl,
I sell the black rat hand winches.
In my opinion the black rat item is in fact the very same as the Tirfor.
They are identical. I have no experience of the other brand you mention.
They are very useful bits of kit, the only real problem being cable management.
I myself & other who I know, found it best to get an old motor cross tyre to keep the cabe in, as opposed the the factory supplied cable reel.
When used in conjunction with a pulley block , even the small model can supply a useful amount of pull.
The other option is to use a high lift jack as a winch. This can be a bit of a faff to rig & only pulls abput 3-4 feet at a time, but if keeping the weight down and you already carry one, it might be thought.
If you go deceide to either route a shortening chain or ratchet strap will make rigging the winch much easier.
Good luck
Nick I am a hob nobber.

I like the Black Rat gear, but LROI did a test on hand winches recently and they gave it to Trifor. That said I have no personal experience of hand winches. Our Aussie cousin know one heck of a lot about off road gear. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

In your opinion would you go with hand winch option vs. real winch? Never used hand winch and some say it's great, others useless? When you speak of cable management, what is the issue?

Tirfor's / hand winches are extremely good at high load / low speed controlled recoveries, due to the overrun on electric winches, the control element is generally the bit that turns a recovery into a nightmare.
Tirfor's are also good as a secondary winch, particularly if you're traversing slopes. An electric winch on the front and a Tirfor on the back (pulling at an angle to the vehicle) will get you out of most situations that would normally result in damage, be prepared for a bit of sweat though
I agree though, the 'Black Rat' ones appear to be a rebadged Tirfor, if you get one, make sure you get a spare shear pin or two... if they break, the winch will fail secure, unlike an electric winch clevis pin which will release all the tension.
