Bike rack options

Hi,

I've spent sometime reading the other bike rack option, but still not 100% clear.

Basically what I would like help on is the following - is it possible to get a bike rack that either :-

* fits to my detachable swan neck towball and allows me to tow my caravan with alko hitch and allows access to the boot and doesn't need removing when reserving in tight spaces ? (If so slightly concerned I will exceed my towbar weight limit ?)

* if I'm gonna use the roof, what is the best system ? And does it have a massive effect on fuel consumption ?

* I like the idea of bike bags, can anyone recommend a good one ?

* lastly I seem to remember seeing years ago in an old landrover international magazine a roof mounted bike rack system that cantilevered down from the roof to a more suitable working height - anyone know if this still exist ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Matt

I went through this entire question with my car when we went to france, there isnt much arounf which will fit on your tow ball, and roof kit adds up if you havent got the bars and rails.....

I ended up with an el cheapo halfords universal carrier on the back of the car. With a bit of playing around it went on, im pretty sure it will go on a disco with a bit more fiddling. This leaves you your full tow bar limit and only costs £59

Thanks,

We've spent the day on the Internet and around shops and opted for decent bike bags to put the bikes in in the caravan to save damaging the upholstery. It also looks like we will now get a Atera STRADA bike rack to use at weekends to go cycling further a field.

How about one if those big covers you get for covering patio furniture with over winter? Put the bikes into your caravan and then drop the cover over, then pack with cushions etc?
