Let me hear your views on the subject matter... 
I'm about to get winter tyres (for snow conditions) for my 17" rims.....
any ideas are most than welcomed!!!

I use cooper ST had no trouble last week on hard packed snow or fresh powder

We go skiing (in the winter) nearly every weekend in the Herz Mountains, Germany and we have never had a problem with snow setting and the standard road tyres from Pirelli
If your worried throw in some snow chains otherwise I wouldn't bother although I am thinking of getting the new Pirelli ATR's at the next tyre change.  Stadt Panzer Power

Nokian make good winter tyres, Pirelli Ice & snow are ok too

Pirelli Ice & snow are good. The summer tyres from Pirelli ("scorpions") I did NOT like but the winter version is OK. Never tried something else in the disco although.
Using an AT tyre as winter tyre as mentioned above is nonsense. Some people get by

From personal experience, definitely have a look at the Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtremes - good value, long lasting, excellent winter traction and surprisingly good as an all year round tyre!  (and they are available in the correct weight rating at 19" rim size!)

I can vouch for the Winteracs aswell - great tyre, very surefooted LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

been running wintracs as all year round tyres for the last 20,000 miles and still loads of tread left and performed well in the snow last week in the loire valley Tintenter

I have the Wintrac 4 Extreme on my D3 during the winter months, they are awesome, -12 on the Autobahn and 115 mph! Still being overtaken by the BMW's though. They aren't just about ice and snow, they are about cold weather, any time the temp dips below 8 degrees they are better than normal tyres.
You don't realise how good they are until you try them in snow. D4 HSE Luxury SDV6,

I've used Vredestein before and I'm probably going to put a set of Wintrac 4's on the D3 for all year use.
Q1. Are they quiet and does the fuel consumpton suffer?
The only problem here in the North East is the price - I was quoted £160 per corner! That seems to be a bit expensive to me.

We are just setting up an account with Vredestein which should be live in 10 days or less.
The 255/55x19 Wintrac 4's will be about £116.00 plus VAT fitted if I have my sums right so long as I have orders for 30, the collection price will be about £101.00 plus VAT.
These prices are not yet cast in stone, but I am happy to pre-order if enough intrest.

Vredestiens in the 80's & 90's for a whole range of cars I ran in Ireland - North & South where gritting & salting roads was & in some areas still is a rare event.
I can vouch for the transformation they make + the performance all year round especially very wet roads (deep surface water)
The mileages I manged to get made sense always into 40 to 50 K miles
The only down side was a bit of noise as the tread blocks seem to "lay over" making a normal saloon car sound a bit "military"
I've got to renew mine soon & Vredestiens are the ones I am going for The Pirrelli Scorpions I have had as OEM tyres have been a big dissapointment BREXIT - done properly.
