Well I can't afford an IID so I just bought the icarsoft lr v2.0.

Should have it tomorrow to read the codes.

My mechanic reckons it's either the compressor knackered or a leak on the air tank.

Code reading tomorrow.

Cheers and many thanks for all the help.

Owning a Disco reminds me of when I used to have one of those orange and white VW campers...there's just no way your going to avoid learning mechanics....

The voltage may be intially low but should rise quite qucikly to near 15volts even with engine just idling, then as it charges the volts will slowly drop again, but I have never seen mine under 14 vots even after a long 100 miles plus run, as I said earlier on I only do short trips so my volts reads pretty much 15v all the time on my daily commute.

I would recheck the volts engine off and engine idling after they have stabilised, I think the clue is in the fact it was initially okay with new battery then trouble started as the volts dropped as alt not keeping up.

Alts are expensive and the cheap ones have a histpoy of going wrong pdq!

@lynalldiscovery

Thanks for that.

Is the only alternator worth buying a Denso? I've just been quoted £195 inc VAT

latest tests.

12.48v engine off

12.10v engine idling.

Is that alt problems? My bro says it might or might not be as they have 'smart' charging and the car might have decided not to charge at that moment. He's just guessing that and has no disco 3 knowledge.

I suspect the alt

left idling for 10 minutes and the voltage is now 14.02v

............errr.....

so now I'm thinking it's the compressor...

if I go down that route do I just need to buy a new compressor and fit or does the drying chamber filters etc all have to be replaced too?

how do I find out if I have a Hitachi or AMK compressor?

Thanks for any replies.

I would say your alt is one its way out, many a post on heres stating alt failure is known to take out the battery as well even a new one!
14.02 is still low especially as you know the battery isnt being charged properly.

If I fire mine up the volts are low 12s then within say 10 to 30 seconds they are high 14s even with heated screen and fast blowers on and this is after the FBH has been runnig for 30 minutes as well.

Worth some research as I believe the alt is told what to do and is not a dumb unit as per older motors.

Of course you could have alt failure AND eas fault Censored

I should add, how are you measuring the volts?

Try charging the old battery up, if it reads 12.6volts or more after being charged all night and left to stand for 2 hours I would put it back on and see if you still get the compressor fault, if you have a faulty alternator it may take the battery out in minutes, better to lose the old battery than the new one.
D3 charge rate should be nearer 15v for the first 5 minutes dropping to 14.6v after start up even at tickover, no need to rev the engine, but if you have a faulty compressor running it could well pull these readings down. I would take the fuse out for the compressor before you start the engine and then check the battery voltage across the battery without and with the engine running with a mult-meter.
Without methodically taking readings and reading fault codes you will be running round like a headless chicken Laughing
It is unusual for a compressor to fail electrically, it is usually the pump side that fails for one reason or another and that causes the compressor to trip out through overheating, if the fault points to the compressor take it off and examine it, there are numerous posts on how to do it and what to check before you buy a new one. Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

OK. Error codes are....

C1A20 - Pressure increases too slow when filling reservoir

U0421 - Invalid data received from ride level control module

U0132 - Lost communication with ride level control module

B1b74 Front foot-defrost mode stepper actuator

B1b70 - Local interconnection network bus circuit 2

U0010 - Medium speed CAN communication bus

phew....

I'm a newbie to this but I suspect the only real issue here is in C1A20.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Swapping the old battery back in until the issue is resolved.

Been monitoring battery activity with the icarsoft tool.

At start up it's around 12.6v then that goes up after a couple of minutes to around 13.2 if I then rev up to 3000rpm the voltage goes to 14.1v

OK so then I turn on all electrical items...lights, radio, heated seats etc etc. and the voltage at idle drops down to 12.5v

does this mean anything to anyone? thanks for any replies.

Yes its knackered Mr. Green

When you fit the recon unit measure the volts in all conditions as again people have had problems, only one that seems to just work is the Denso unit.

Top tip is one of the cheap volt meters that goes in the cig lghter so you can see at a glance whats going one.

Really good, Ive got a few and all work well, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LCD-Cigarette-L...SwvWtbkdht
