I wish my gearbox would adapt to my style of driving it changes up a lot later than when I would change up the engine never seams to have any work to do I think that the mpg would be much better than it is.

For long uphill hauls in France (done them so I know how long they can be) You need to keep the engine at peak torque as much as possible. This is the most efficient engine speed, and the engine will produce less heat and use less fuel relatively, as a result.

Peak torque is about 1950 rpm I seem to recall. So I used command shift on both my old 2.7 and my newer 8 speed 3.0 to keep the revs in this area.

No issues encountered even on a hot day. If the car can’t maintain the revs, because the hill is too steep, you need to drop a gear and possibly slow down to maintain peak torque. Not always ideal I know!

Reviving an old thread, I know but does sport mode on a D4 do anything to the suspension? Not sure if I am imagining it but my D4 seems less wallowy on twisty lanes in S.
Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

Have towed large TA's with D3, D4's and D5's. Have tried both D and S as well as cruise and none cruise.
On D3 and D4's I always found D the best for me on long hauls through hilly France. However with the D5's have found sport to be better and more economical. Have also found that none cruise gives better economy by a fair bit but cruise is much nicer driving experience on the long hauls.
So for me when in France I use sport mode with cruise.
But I think its down to personal choice as the car is happy with either. Thumbs Up
