Belts and suspenders question (112k service) |
|
Hi all,
sorry, I guess my OCD forces me to ask: When I had a D3, the timing belt change was at around 100k miles, now I have a D4 SDV6 with 98k miles on the clock and I was already preparing to have that stuff done when visiting the UK.
Checking the forum, however, I noticed I might have until 112k miles to do it. Is that really so?
I don't want to ask my local LR dealer as they have changed ownership and I don't want to go there anymore.
Sorry, I know this is probably one of the more stupid questions,
thanks anyway,
cheerio,
Thorsten

The service interval is 16000 miles or 1 year. So the belts need doing at 112,000 miles or 7 years whichever comes first. MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
MY2012 D4 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - retired to a new home

This might help:-

I am somewhat obsessive about maintenance; I change the oil & filer every half-year or 8k miles; and I will replace the oil pump when doing the belts. A fresh oil pump will give better lubrication than an old one, and I will sleep well.

Thanks a lot to JonS and Moo for their answers and encouragement.
ginjeremy: I had to attract people to a boring topic. Now go and wash your brain with soap.
A little less thanks to NJSS - you opened up another dilemma. I'll be in the UK by end of June, and good experience with Rockingham Landrovers would have got me to let them do the belt change at then around 105'000 miles. Now that I know I can wait for longer (until about February '19) I am not sure whether to still let them do this and a few other things (oil pump) earlier, in June, or wait until the last possible moment, because who knows, the car might break down anyway, I might have a fit and sell it to get a younger Disco 4 again etc. etc.
So some input is welcome: Have the stuff done in June, or wait until later? And if I let the Rockingham guys do it, what other stuff should be done? I read about the "belt in the back" and other weird stuff, NJSS introduced the oil pump, and wasn't there always something about the compressor?
Less confused and more confused,
Thorsten

Don't worry about the compressor; if it fails there won't be dramatic damage, unlike the oil pump. Access to the compressor is easy should it need to be replaced.
Access to the oil pump is difficult, and the rationale for changing it when doing the belts is that it only involves 2-3 hours extra labour when doing all belts, plus of course the cost of the pump.
If you are replacing the pump a new crankshaft bolt should be fitted & of course a new oil seal.
If you are not expecting to keep the car for long, then may you might decide to take a risk & not change the pump.
